This is "My Name It is Nothin'," a look at when comic books guest star celebrities, but their names are changed so as to avoid any legal problems.

Today, based on a suggestion from reader Stephen R., we take a look at the time that Clark Kent had to help Kurt Vonnegut finish a novel!

The story appeared in 1974's Superman #274 by Elliot S! Maggin, Curt Swan and Vince Colletta, where Clark Kent and Kurt Vonnegut are both on a talk show together...

The "Wade Halibut" name is a reference to Vonnegut's famous fictional writer, Kilgore Trout, who appeared in many of Vonnegut's classic works, like Breakfast of Champions and Slaughterhouse Five...

Halibut/Vonnegut decides that Clark Kent will help him break his writer's block by putting Clark Kent into the middle of a fantastical scenario and seeing how he reacts...

Of course, when Halibut's plan is put into place...

He doesn't get that Clark Kent is caught up in an actual dilemma, one involving Superman, as well.

So Superman has to save Halibut without letting Halibut realize how he has stumbled on to a connection between Clark and Superman...

In the end, Superman has to save the day from a device that could almost destroy the Earth.

This inspires Halibut to follow through with his novel by having it end with the Earth being destroyed, since there is no Superman in his fictional world!

What a delightfully weird idea by Maggin.

Thanks to Stephen for the suggestion!

Okay, people, there are obviously TONS of great examples of this sort of thing in comic book history, so get thy selves to thine e-mail and send in suggestions for future editions of My Name It is Nothin' to brianc@cbr.com!
