Superman is one of the most powerful beings in the DC Multiverse with nearly unlimited strength, super speed, heat vision, and more to turn him into a symbol of hope for the people of Earth. However, Superman is not invincible: he is susceptible to magic-based attacks, he is reduced to human levels by red sun energy, and of course, he is affected by Kryptonite.

Kryptonite is an irradiated piece of crystal from his homeworld of Krypton that causes physiological changes to any Kryptonian in close proximity. However, there have been many different kinds of Kryptonite over the years with different effects.

11 Green Kryptonite

The most common and well-known variety of Kryptonite emits radiation that causes Kryptonians to experience flu-like symptoms while reducing the amount of power obtained by the energy of the yellow sun. This version of Kryptonite is often weaponized by characters like Lex Luthor and even Batman to battle the Man of Steel.

A common misconception is that green Kryptonite reduces Superman to human-level but the truth is that he's still strong, but so weak & in pain that he's almost useless around the mineral and can even be killed by it if exposed for too long. Humans also are affected by green Kryptonite through long-term exposure.

10 Red Kryptonite

This version of Kryptonite has had various effects over the decades: in some stories it causes Superman to feel extreme pain and become transparent while overloading his yellow sun energy deposits. In the CW's Smallville series, red Kryptonite removed all inhibitions.

Then in another case, red Kryptonite depowered Superman completely and would have been permanent if it weren't for a loophole enabled by Mr. Mxyzptlk. It also has caused excessive hair growth and the occasional transformation into a dragon, proving that sometimes comic books are very odd.

9 Gold Kryptonite

Gold Kryptonite

Green Kryptonite is pretty bad but as long as it is removed from the premises, Superman (or any affected Kryptonian) will return to a normal state. The same could not be said for the golden variant of Kryptonite which can destroy the ability to process yellow sun energy.

Exposure to the gold Kryptonite completely removes all powers from Kryptonian cells thus turning them into a regular Kryptonian like back on their homeworld. It is a permanent effect with no other harmful side effects. It also happens to be one of the rarest forms of Kryptonite.

8 Blue Kryptonite

Blue Kryptonite

It's completely harmless at least for the Kryptonians of the typical DC Universe but it does have an effect on Kryptonians from the Bizarro world. Essentially, blue Kryptonite has the same poison-like effects on Bizarro Superman that the green does on the normal Superman.

It has also been depicted as a remedy for the effects of red Kryptonite. In Smallville, it was depicted to have the same effects as gold Kryptonite but only for as long as a Kryptonian is exposed to it. In the Crisis On Two Earths animated movie, it has the same effects on Ultraman as it does on Bizarro.

7 Synthetic Kryptonite

Proof that it's better to always get natural products: this version of Kryptonite was inadvertently created by Richard Pryor's character Gus Gorman in Christopher Reeve's Superman III thus leading to what many fans consider the best portions of what is an overall disappointing sequel.

The exposure to synthetic Kryptonite causes Superman's morals to slowly degrade and turn him into a darker and evil version of himself that splits apart to battle with Clark Kent. The heroic version of the character wins and retakes control in the end.

6 White Kryptonite

White Kryptonite

Typically, the radiation emitted by these minerals is effective towards Kryptonians but in the case of the white Kryptonite, it has no effect on any person. It does, however, kill any plant life no matter what planet of origin. So this is a version of Kryptonite that would make Poison Ivy shake in her boots.

In the comics, Superboy uses white Kryptonite in the 50th century to stop a rapidly growing alien plant that originated from a crashed alien spacecraft from spreading.

5 Platinum Kryptonite

Gotham Girl Powered By Platinum Kryptonite

One of the most surprising versions of the crystal is platinum which has no real effect on Kryptonians but its radiation causes changes in human physiology. It grants the powers of a Kryptonian to a human permanently which one would think would become an often-used plot device, but this version hasn't appeared much.

Superman originally gave it to Batman as a gift but, of course, Batman doesn't use the mineral for himself. He would later on give the upgrade to Claire Glover AKA Gotham Girl instead, turning her into, technically, Gotham City's most powerful superhero.

4 Black Kryptonite

Evil Supergirl Made From Black Kryptonite

This Kryptonite was actually created on Smallville to help Clark Kent destroy his reprogrammed and evil personality Kal-El. The black Kryptonite physically split Clark and Kal-El apart allowing him to battle his evil side and win, similar to the synthetic Kryptonite from Superman III.

In the comics, the Kryptonite debuted with the same effects as it did in Smallville, effectively splitting Kara Zor-El AKA Supergirl into two beings: one evil, one good. However, for Superman, black Kryptonite caused him to lose his mind and turn him evil. The Batman Who Laughs uses black Kryptonite for some grisly murders.

3 Silver Kryptonite

Silver Kryptonite

One of the stranger versions of Kryptonite, Superman does not lose his powers nor is he harmed by it. Instead, Kryptonians are affected by it similar to cannabis where it removes inhibitions, causes food cravings, and can provide hallucinations.

In Smallville, it also is depicted as a hallucinogenic except instead of acting like a drug, it caused Clark to feel extreme paranoia and experience delusions that everyone was out to get him.

2 Pink Kryptonite

Superman Transformed Into A Woman By Pink Kryptonite

There are two known effects for this Kryptonite and both are quite different: the first use of pink Kryptonite caused Superman's to change sexuality, effectively making him gay. This moment from the Supergirl comics became quite famous for how jarring and surprising it was.

In the Justice League Action animated series, it has a very different effect: Firestorm changes Metallo's Kryptonite heart into a pink heart and the radiation from the mineral causes Superman to transform into a just as effective and powerful woman of steel.

1 Anti-Kryptonite

Ultraman Powered By Anti-Kryptonite in DC Comics

Like platinum Kryptonite, this version of Kryptonite has no effect on Kryptonians but instead works on humans the same way green Kryptonite does on Superman. It is more dangerous for humans, however, seeing how it poisons and weakens a race that is not superpowered.

However, Anti-Kryptonite acts as the main source of power for the Clark Kent AKA Ultraman of the Antimatter Universe. Ultraman is one of the leading members of the Crime Syndicate Of Amerika alongside Superwoman and Owlman.
