Krypto the Superdog is one of Superman's closest allies. They often say that a dog is man's best friend and that appears to be the case for Kryptonians as well. The pair have shared a lot of memories together; the majority of which were within the heat of battle.

Krypto is one of the most loyal, impressive, & iconic pets in the DC Universe and has gone on to star in his own comics & animated TV shows. Despite the huge popularity of Krypto and his continued appearances, there's a number of story beats and doggy details that don't quite add up about this powerful pooch.

10 His Loyalty To The Kryptonians

Krypto in space

Part of Krypto's origins actually appears to be quite cruel. It is a common practise to use animals in scientific investigations on Earth. Indeed, many countries have sent their pets into outer space to test the effects it has on a living creature.

The Kryptonians did a very similar thing, using Krypto as a scientific subject in space. Luckily the dog survived the experiment, but it is surprising that this clever canine actually has any loyalty to the Kryptonians at all, considering they were prepared for him to die for their own discoveries; unnecessarily considering the planet's advanced technology.

9 His Disappearance

Krypto the super dog pulling boy

Clark Kent and Krypto were friends for many years as the young Kryptonian continued to grow. There comes a time when every boy must leave home and venture into the big wide world and Krypto didn't go along for that ride.

But it's unclear why exactly he didn't go. Krypto instead went off into space, although it seems that there isn't much for a lone dog to do out in the galaxy by itself. Such a loyal friend probably should have stuck with the powerful Superman family, rather than flying off without a purpose.

8 Superman Powers

It's always been a bit confusing as to why Krypto, a dog, has managed to exhibit the exact same powers as Kal-El, a human. The yellow sun over planet Earth is usually the answer given for a Kryptonian's amazing gifts.

What seems incredibly strange though is that a dog and a human experience identical effects of this shifting sunlight. Krypto's power level is far more appropriate for a dog, but it is a bit far fetched even for the world of comic books.

7 Proty II's Petition

Proty II DC Legion of Super Pets

The Legion of Super-Pets is the team that Krypto is most well known for being a part of. One character, a powerful shapeshifting alien called Proty, wanted to join this elite group and start to petition in favor of his membership.

The character went as far as to impersonate Krypto the Superdog, which should be almost impossible considering his powers. The real Krypto was kept away from the team, trapped and unable to tell them. However, after all this. Krypto was even happy to accept Proty into the group!

6 Krypto's Return

Krypto

Krypto famously gave his life in one of the most heartbreaking deaths in DC history. While he would return like so many other characters, but it was unclear exactly whether this Krypto was supposed to be comparable to the original.

In fact, there were a few Kryptos after the original's death. The first was a Multiverse iteration, before Crisis on Infinite Earths completely changed continuity, giving Krypto a far more confusing origin since he was supposedly an Earth dog.

5 Locking Krypto In The Fortress

Fortress of solitude

Krypto is an important character in the DC Universe so it was pretty confusing when the writers decided to remove him from the table. In the comics, Superman clearly thought that Krypto was an expert guard dog.

He therefore, quite unmercifully, locked him up in the Fortress of Solitude in order to protect it. This was a confusing and cruel move, especially since the Fortress has had so many robotic guards in the past.

4 Krypto's Power Levels

Krypto's power levels do seem to vary widely from comic to comic. It's quite confusing how powerful he really is. While he's supposedly weaker than Superman, he once managed to briefly match Superboy Prime in a fight.

It's a trend that follows Superman himself though, as his own gifts seem to be only as amazing as the writer who's forging them. For Krypto, the abilities he possesses really appear to be as strong as the situation demands them to be.

3 The Legion Of Super-Pets

Krypto Legion of Super Pets

The Legion of Super-Pets have always operated in a strange way. It's quite a confusing team when considering that it's just a group of super powered animals, that somehow work together to protect other animals.

In fact, alongside the Space Canine Patrol, there are two different animal teams that Krypto is a part of. But then again, a little bit of comic book logic has to be applied to these situations.

2 A Cloned Retcon

Legion-of-Super-Pets-Krypto-Modern

In the New 52, the origins of Krypto have been changed completely once more and this time the canine is actually a powerful clone, made in a lab. Somehow these gifts have been given to both a dog and indeed a human in Superboy, which is a confusing change to these characters. Once again it's also odd that the powers manifested themselves in the same way!

1 The Phantom Zone

Wonder Twins Phantom Zone 1

The Phantom Zone is a dangerous place. Once again in Krypto's life he was trapped somewhere he didn't want to be. In this case, a prison usually designed for the greatest of villains on Earth and in the wider Multiverse.

However, Krypto somehow managed to find a way to send some kind of message to Earth from the Phantom Zone. How a dog could work this out is pretty confusing, especially since very few have managed to make contact in this way.
