The following contains major spoilers for Adventures of Superman: Jon Kent #1, on sale now from DC Comics.

Ever since Lois Lane made her debut nearly 85 years ago, she has been one of the most ever-present figures in the Superman mythos, if not the entire DC Universe. Over the years, Lois has been more than just a partner or confidant, but a force for good in her own right at nearly every turn. Unfortunately, this only makes it all the more heartbreaking now that Lois has met her latest superpowered self who has come looking for the last kind of help either of them would ever want to be asked to give.

When Lord Industries loses control of their satellite array, the titular hero of Adventures of Superman: Jon Kent #1 (by Tom Taylor, Clayton Henry, Jordie Bellaire, and Wes Abbott) is quick to take to the skies and stave off any undo destruction. As luck would have it, he isn't the only Superman doing exactly that, as Val-Zod has ventured all the way from Earth-2. Of course, Val-Zod hasn't come just for a friendly chat, nor has his companion Red Tornado. As it turns out, they have come looking for Jon's help in stopping the rogue Ultraman who has been slaughtering Supermen across the Multiverse. While Lois is understandably upset, the Red Tornado of Earth-2 proves to be difficult to argue with, especially once she realizes she is speaking to none other than herself.

Adventures of Superman Introduced Lois Lane's Most Powerful Variant

When the current Earth-2 Lois Lane was first seen in 2012's World's Finest #0 (by Paul Levitz and Kevin Maguire), she was little more than a memory in the mind of Kara Zor-El. After helping Clark to raise Kara as their own, this particular Lois lost her life in the first of Apokolips' assaults on Earth. Though her legacy drove Kara to continue fighting the good fight, it wouldn't be long before Lois was given an opportunity to do the very same by being reborn as Red Tornado.

In the time since then, the Lois of Earth-2 has proven time and time again that she is just as capable as any other hero, and far more capable than any other version of herself. This Lois even helped Val-Zod learn to control his powers and navigate a world in desperate need of saving. She has also grown acutely aware of what a world without a Superman is destined to become, especially one unlucky enough to be visited by Ultraman. Knowing this, Red Tornado asking her counterpart to let Jon join them is gut-wrenching, to say the least. But the fact that she is the one asking makes it impossible for the primary Lois to simply say "no."

The Red Tornado Lois Lane Has a Tragic Past

Earth-2's Lois might be an android, but she is still a Lois, and the variant fans know best is unable to ignore that no matter how hard she tries. As someone who genuinely understands her counterpart's feelings, Lois also understands how painful it is to even bring up Jon joining in the fight against Ultraman. This is to say nothing of the younger Superman having previously been subjected to untold torment at Ultraman's hands. Though even that is a concern that Red Tornado is entirely empathetic in regard to her other self.

Between the dire straits that the Multiverse is in and the fact that Red Tornado understands what the primary Lois is feeling, it seems like a sure thing that Jon will be accompanying his fellow heroes in their mission. That doesn't make it any less worrying for Jon's mother, although Red Tornado's watchful eye should alleviate at least some of her concerns. If nothing else, at least a version of her will be looking out for her son. If any of them were going to, the one with superpowers is probably the right Lois for the job.
