Not long after Jon Kent officially became DC's new Superman, DC announced that he would be dating his new friend Jay Nakamura. While they haven't officially gotten together yet, Superman: Son of Kal-El #4 laid a lot of groundwork is laid down for that moment. After meeting his parents on the Kent Farm in Smallville, Jay reveals a secret power to the new Superman, which will drastically change how their relationship goes from here.
In "Proportional Response," by Tom Taylor, Gabe Eltaeb, Hi-Fi, Dave Sharpe and Daniele Di Nicuolo, Henry Bendix, the villainous president of Gamorra, drops the post-human known as Faultline from an airplane on the Kent farm to blow it up. She's basically a falling earthquake, but Jon moves quickly upon impact to rescue Jay and his grandparents, only to learn that Jay can take care of himself.
Jon saves his family and meets Jay on the outside, who admits he's a post-human that was experimented on by Gamorra. Suicide Squad veterans Aerie and Wink join the conversation, confirming Bendix has many experiments like them. They've been tortured, used as guinea pigs, with some even dying as lab rats. Jay's now obsessed with Bendix and Gamorra, using his media traction as the Truth to seed this out about refugees, but Aerie and Wink admit they may need stronger forms of action.
Knowing grave measures are needed that transcend sanctioned diplomacy, Jon confronts Bendix, but what's worth noting is how this revelation will affect him and Jay moving forward. It won't be like the Lois Lane and Superman relationship where the Man of Steel constantly had to save her from villains like Lex Luthor. In Jay's case, he can handle his own, literally slipping in and out of trouble.
However, this may spell danger as well as it's not clear what side effects he could experience. Jay's body may still be changing and there could be adverse reactions as he continues on his mission or even with Jon. Bendix may also find vulnerabilities in the lab to use against the hacktivist, so Jay's biggest strength might become his biggest weakness.
For now, Jay can hold his own, which leaves us wondering if he's got any more secrets hidden. Only time will tell, but this improves the dynamic for the couple as both can relate to each other even more. It'll help build their bond, and in doing so, they can provide that super-shoulder to lean on when times get tough.
