The following contains spoilers for Batman/Superman: World's Finest #3, on sale now from DC Comics.

Kryptonite isn't Superman's only weakness. The Man of Steel is also extremely vulnerable to magic. All of his strength is next to useless if a foe has the arcane arts on their side. A single spell in the right place at the right time, or even an enchanted weapon like Aquaman's trident, could take Earth's greatest hero down in an instant.

However, Superman isn't totally helpless, as he proved in Batman/Superman: World's Finest #3 (by Mark Waid, Dan Mora, Tamra Bonvillain, and Aditya Bidikar). The two titular heroes had rushed to the rescue of Billy Batson in the last issue, only to be transported to hell by Felix Faust. Whilst Batman panicked, overcome by the villain's magic, Superman did anything but.

Batman Superman Worlds Finest 3 Superman Batman trapped in hell

The hellscape had Billy and Batman totally trapped, with both bound by the denizens of hell. Superman, on the other hand, remained untouched. He was left floating, with his eyes closed. When the Dark Knight called out for help, the Man of Steel simply shushed him. Then, out of nowhere, he took a Batarang from Batman's utility belt and took out Faust with a perfect throw, having determined where exactly he was by listening for his heartbeat. In doing so, they returned to reality and were able to defeat their magical enemy.

Batman focused on Superman's perfect aim, but he overlooked something even more incredible. Superman is completely vulnerable to magic, and yet Faust's hell illusions, which had the other two trapped, did nothing to him. In the midst of all the panic, the Man of Tomorrow remained calm and allowed his wits to overcome this seemingly impenetrable obstacle. It was some smart thinking, realizing that Faust wouldn't have fled and that he instead stayed to watch the heroes suffer. Then, of course, figuring out where their invisible enemy was by using his super-hearing showed his ingenuity too. He could have flung his incredible strength about like a wrecking ball but chose a subtler approach to save the day.

This showed that Superman was more prepared to combat his greatest weaknesses than he seemed. Since he's virtually untouchable many fail to see how intelligent he really is. They only see his muscles. However, he trained his mind rigorously at the Fortress of Solitude before he ever came out to the world as Superman.

Batman Superman Worlds Finest 3 Superman uses his wits to combat magic

This latest encounter against Faust proved that the Man of Steel was far from powerless, even when he doesn't have his powers. This is currently being proven in the latest run of Action Comics as well, where a powerless Superman is still managing to overthrow Mongul in his own home, both through ingenuity and his own legend. Even when he lost most of his team, he was able to rally the people of Warworld, who were all fiercely loyal to Mongul, and build a force strong enough to face even the most powerful foes.

There's a lot more to Superman than meets the eye. Even though he may appear helpless in the face of Kryptonite, a red sun, or magic, as is the case here, he has the intelligence to come up with a solution that doesn't rely on being the strongest person in the room. The Man of Steel has many hidden skills up his sleeve. In reality, it's who he is that makes him the greatest superhero of all time, rather than just his epic abilities.
