In October 2022, it was announced that James Gunn and Peter Safran were named co-chairs and co-CEOs of DC Studios, and the duo quickly began developing a brand-new, long-term plan for the DCU. Ahead of Gunn and Safran's upcoming meeting with Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, a rumor has begun circulating that the pair are planning on shelving Man of Steel 2. According to the report, Cavill also filmed a cameo for the upcoming Flash film, but "there is a debate inside the studio as to whether or not to keep the cameo and if its inclusion promises something that the studio would have no plans on delivering."

Cavill debuted his version of Superman in 2013's Man of Steel, then went on to play the iconic character in 2016's Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and 2017's Justice League. Snyder used old footage of the actor to include him in 2021's Zack Snyder's Justice League, then Cavill finally donned the suit again when he appeared in the post-credits scene of Black Adam. After Black Adam's opening weekend, Cavill took to Instagram to officially announce his Superman return. "A very small taste of what’s to come, my friends. The dawn of hope renewed. Thank you for your patience, it will be rewarded," he said.

After his Superman return seemed to be a sure thing, Cavill stated he was excited to speak with Gunn about the future of the character and looked forward to him running DC Studios. "He's clearly a very, very talented man, and I cannot wait to sit down and have long, long conversations with him," Cavill said.

Black Adam is now playing in theaters and available on Digital.
