WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Superman: Son of Kal-El #5, on sale now from DC Comics.

Jon Kent has been stepping into his father's role as Superman, taking over the mantle of the Man of Steel while his father and the Authority move to Warworld on a mission to save the prisoners of Mongul. In many ways, Jon has been proving himself adept for the job, committing himself to helping others across the globe. And it appears that he's getting his own variant of Lois Lane as a love interest, setting his eyes on the young reporter Jay.

Superman: Son of Kal-El #5 (by Tom Taylor, John Timms, Hi-Fi, and Dave Sharpe) proves that Jay Nakamura -- Jon Kent's new love interest -- is the perfect new take on the character archetype that Lois Lane introduced and perfected, making him an ideal romantic interest for Jon going forward as the young hero continues to grow into his own.

Superman Jon Kent and His Boyfriend

Jay Nakamura made his debut in Superman: Son of Kal-El #2 (by Taylor and Timms). A refugee from Gamorran Island, Jay has proven to be a pretty compatible romantic partner for the now openly bisexual Jon Kent. In many ways, Jay is very much like Lois Lane, and could inspire the same kind of emotions in Jon that Lois brings out of Clark Kent. Like Jon's mother, Jay has a deep-seated commitment to finding the truth in things, exposing deceptions and reporting them to the public. Like Lois, he's been shown to be fairly fearless in this pursuit -- particularly because he possesses the ability to phase through attacks, which keeps him relatively safe from harm.

As someone who'd be otherwise constantly concerned about the safety of his paramours, it makes sense that Jon would be attracted to someone who was equipped to keep themselves out of danger. It's also an ideal power-set for a reporter, allowing Jay to go on his own and investigate potential stories. Jay's commitment to finding and reporting on the truth gives him his own personal agency and drive to change the world for the better, effectively giving him the same core motivation as Jon and his parents. It goes a long way towards explaining why the new Superman would be attracted to Jay, and paints an interesting parallel to how his parents fell in love.

Jon and Jay kissing in Superman: Son of Kal-El

Jay even openly considers himself a fan of Lois, reacting in true fanboy fashion when he has the chance to meet her. He seems to be genuinely inspired by her mission to help the world. In Superman: Son of Kal-El #5, he proves to be romantic and funny, charming Jon and eventually even sharing a kiss with the new Superman.

It's a supremely cute moment, with Jon then having to excuse himself to go try and save lives around the world -- something Jay meets with a bemused acceptance and support. In many ways, Jay matches Lois in terms of personality and clear commitment to Superman -- making him a quietly ideal love interest for the modern Superman, zeroing in on the elements that make Superman and Lois' romance so enduring and finding a way to bring it into the 21st century with an eye towards diversity.
