WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Batman/Superman #11 by Joshua Williamson, Clayton Henry, and Alejandro Sanchez, on sale now.

Batman has the earned reputation of having a genius-level IQ, always being prepared, and being one of the world's greatest detectives. In Batman/Superman #11, when Batman is taken out of the game by Ultra-Humanite, who inhabits the body of a large gorilla, Superman puts his own detective skills to work putting into question if Batman really is the world's greatest.

In the "Atomic" story arc in Batman/Superman, one of Superman's oldest villains has returned. The Ultra-Humanite, created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster in Action Comics #13, comes to Gotham City to have his revenge on the Man of Steel. As part of his plan, Ultra-Humanite turns the reformed villain Atomic Skull into a bomb. After Atomic Skull explodes and wipes out most of downtown Gotham City, Batman and Superman figure out that the Ultra-Humanite is behind everything.

Unfortunately, Batman doesn't figure out Ultra-Humanite's plans soon enough and is kidnapped by the supervillain and similarly altered like Atomic Skull. Through an operation, Ultra-Humanite imbues Batman with the same powers Atomic Skull had and also turns Batman into a bomb. To test his control over the Caped Crusader, Ultra-Humanite sends Batman out to confront a couple of baddies as they try to rob a bank. The test is successful as Batman takes out the robbers with his new powers.

Batman is able to resist Ultra-Humanite's control just long enough to be rescued by Superman. When the Man of Steel arrives at Ultra-Humanite's headquarters, the supervillain tries to get Batman to kill Supes. But in addition to his high intelligence and detective skills, Batman is also known to have an iron will, and he is able to resist Ultra-Humanite's control. Surprised with Superman's sudden appearance, Ultra-Humanite asks Supes how he found him. Superman confidently responds, "Batman isn't the only detective."

Superman explains to Ultra-Humanite that when his drones kidnapped Batman, they left behind a particular radiation signature similar to that of Atomic Skull's. The uniqueness of the radiation pointed Superman in the direction of Ultra-Humanite's headquarters. When he got closer, Superman could hear the buzzing of the drones, and this led him right to Ultra-Humanite's front door.

It makes perfect sense that Superman, in theory, could be one of the greatest detectives around. Superman has x-ray and microscopic vision that could allow him to uncover the smallest clues at a crime scene like clothing fibers or even fingerprints on a coffee mug. Superman would be able to scan a room in a fraction of the time it would take for an entire team of forensic experts to look for clues.

Superman also has super hearing which could be useful when investigating a crime. If Superman focuses his concentration enough, he can hear anyone's heartbeat anywhere in the world. This would be pretty handy if trying to locate a missing person or if you're trying to hear a conversation in the next building. Super hearing also has the added benefit of turning Superman into a living lie detector, as he would be able to hear someone's heartbeat get faster when they were lying.

With all his superpowers, Superman could easily be a better detective than Batman. However, Superman lacks an essential element that Batman has. Before he was Batman, Bruce Wayne traveled the world and trained with some of the world's greatest detectives at the time. Batman's natural talents and intelligence were honed through years of rigorous training with masters of their craft. It's one thing to have a natural inclination to be good at something, but without the proper training that potential would remain untapped. If Superman were to train with Batman to become a detective there's little doubt Supes could surpass Batman. But then again, why would Superman want to do that? He's already best friends with the World's Greatest Detective.
