Superman has been the biggest icon of the superhero genre since his creation in 1938's Action Comics #1. In the almost 90 years since his creation, the hero has enjoyed a number of crossovers, adventures and battles that have defined his comics. Superman has battled many characters in the DC Universe and beyond. However, there are still a number of fights fans have been waiting years to see materialize.

Everyone from evil analogs of his story to successful antiheroes form a strong and dynamic list of characters who fans would love to see go head-to-head with the Blue Boy Scout. From pulp magazine classics to Image Comics and beyond, some iconic comic characters deserve to fight Superman.

10 Superman Vs Hellboy

While many heroes and villains in comics wouldn't stand a chance against Superman, Hellboy's supernatural and magical origins give him an edge. One of the biggest questions in Hellboy history is just how powerful he could be if he embraced his destiny as King of Hell.

Hellboy is no stranger to the DCU, and once crossed over with Batman and Starman. Seeing him take a fight to Superman could settle the question of just how powerful the red hero can be when reaching full potential. With the BPRD backing him, Hellboy could utilize the supernatural to great effect against Supes.

9 Superman Vs Doc Savage

Doc Savage was one of the earliest heroes in comics, and many aspects of his story helped inspire elements of Superman's story. The two heroes are worlds apart, with Doc Savage being an adventurous human in peak condition compared to the all-powerful alien from Krypton.

It would be great for a crossover story to acknowledge the relationship between the two. Typical crossovers begin with a fight between the heroes, and it would be interesting to see what a hero like Savage would make of Superman. The match could be intellectual or a powerless Superman, like his fight with Mohammed Ali.

8 Superman Vs Doctor Fate

Doctor Fate is a hero fans seldom get to see cut loose. Fate is incredibly powerful, and most Justice Society villains do not compare to his magical might, so finding a challenge is difficult. Fortunately, Superman is a DC powerhouse.

Doctor Fate's ancient magic would make him one of the most formidable users against Superman, especially if Nabu takes over. The powerful Lord of Order has reality-altering abilities that could completely turn the tables against Superman.

7 Superman Vs Batman (Where Superman Wins)

Batman and Superman have fought one another several times over the last few decades. Stories like Hush and Dark Knight Returns have chronicled their grudge matches across the multiverse. However, they virtually all end with Batman triumphant over the Man of Steel.

As fun as it can be to watch the mere mortal Batman defeat the godlike Superman, it's left fans wondering how Superman fails so often. It would be great to read a story where Superman handily defeats Batman. No Kryptonite or armored reinforcements for the Caped Crusader.

6 Superman Vs Spawn

Spawn stands in a green cloud with batman knocked down

Spawn is one of the most powerful antiheroes in indie comics. The Image hero, created by Todd McFarlane, was born of Hell when he was sent there after his murder. The king of Hell, Malebolgia, made Spawn a superhuman being in the hopes that he would lead his armies.

Spawn's necroplasm as well as his seasoned fighting skills and powers of teleportation would make him a serious threat to Superman. If the dark antihero could transport the Man of Steel to his home turf in Hell, there's no telling what the outcome would be.

5 Superman Vs Injustice Superman

Injustice Superman is a popular Elseworlds version of the Man of Steel. Created when Joker tricked Clark Kent into murdering Lois Lane, the hero then killed the Clown Prince of Crime, starting him down a path of authoritarianism and murder.

Injustice Superman is a perfect match for Superman within the DC multiverse, having all the hero's strengths without his moral restraint. Fans saw the main Superman battle the Injustice Superman in the Injustice: Gods Among Us video game, but the two versions should battle within DC's comic continuity as well.

4 Superman Vs Thor

Thor is one of Marvel's most powerful heroes, thanks to his literal godlike status from Norse mythology. As the God of Thunder, Thor is empowered with magic that would make him a genuine threat to Superman, due to the hero's vulnerability to the supernatural.

Thor is a good match even for Hulk, so he has more than proved his muscle. A battle between Thor and Superman could also result in a great hero moment where Superman wields the Thor's hammer, proving him worthy of the Norse god's magic.

3 Superman Vs Omni Man

Omni Man was created for Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley's Invincible in 2004. As the father of the book's main hero, Mark Grayson, Omni Man begins as a mentor to his son after murdering his fellow heroes. From there, he escalates into a kind of Injustice Superman figure.

Omni Man, like many great indie supervillains, gained mainstream attention when the series was adapted to TV, with Amazon's Invincible animated series. Considering how easily he defeated other powerful heroes in his own universe, a fight against Superman would be an interesting visual.

2 Superman Vs Homelander

Homelander threatens A-Train

Arguably Superman's most famous evil analog outside of DC is The Boys' Homelander. Created by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, Homelander is a terrible person who masquerades behind the Superman persona created for him. As the universe's main villain, many fans wonder just how strong he is.

Homelander has gained a strong mainstream following thanks to Amazon's adaptation of The Boys, in which the villain has been written with a touch more nuance. The Man of Steel could humble Homelander in a satisfying fight.

1 Superman Vs Hulk

The Incredible Hulk grimacing in Marvel Comics

Hulk is one of the most evenly matched superheroes with Superman. The angrier the hero gets, the stronger he becomes. At the end of Geoff Johns and Gary Frank's Doomsday Clock, DC even vaguely teased readers with a fight between Superman and Hulk.

"Who could win in a fight between Hulk and Superman?" is one of the most debated topics among comic book fans. Either hero has near-limitless strength, and it would be interesting to see how the blind rage of Hulk fares against the moral code of Superman. DC and Marvel need another "vs" crossover to produce a modern showdown between these two titans.
