Superman & Lois star Jordan Elsass has explained why he chose to depart the DC superhero series after two seasons.

Twitter user @DevsMastani recently posted a Cameo video on his account that Elsass had recorded for someone named Jake. In the video, the actor revealed that he left the CW series for a very important and personal reason. "It’s been a tough few weeks, as you might imagine, with everything going on with the show. It’s sad, it’s a real shame. I know that I was pumped for Season 3, for sure, but what are you going to do? Anyway, mental health is definitely 100-percent priority. It’s pinnacle. It’s got to take precedence," Elsass said. "And mine has been … the last couple of years … it’s been rough. I need some time to myself. I’m still debating whether I’m even going to act for a while. I may go in a different direction. I know that’s definitely going to be disappointing to some people."

Elsass' departure from Superman and Lois was announced in Aug. 2022 with Warner Bros. Television stating that the actor had "notified the Studio that he will not be returning to Superman & Lois for Season 3 due to personal reasons" and that the "role of Jonathan Kent will be recast." At the time, Warner Bros. TV did not disclose a specific reason for Elsass' decision to leave the show, which led many DC fans to theorize what led to his departure. However, sources close to the production disclosed that his departure was "not a result of a workplace-related issue." Elsass' Cameo video has now revealed that the actor chose to leave Superman and Lois to focus on his mental health.

Superman and Lois' Connection to the Arrowverse

Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch headline Superman and Lois as the titular couple, reprising their respective roles from previous Arrowverse series like Supergirl and The Flash. This led many Arrowverse fans to believe that Superman and Lois was set on Earth-Prime, the main Arrowverse Earth that is home to Grant Gustin's The Flash, Melissa Benoist's Supergirl and the Legends of Tomorrow. However, in the Season 2 finale, titled "Waiting For Superman," fans were shocked to learn that Superman and Lois was set in its own world, which showrunner Todd Helbing explained was to allow the creative team the opportunity to put their "own stamp on the Superman property." This revelation has left The Flash as the only Arrowverse-set series still airing on The CW, meaning the Arrowverse's Earth-Prime will come to an end when The Flash concludes in 2023.
