The Superman & Lois fanbase was rocked by the shocking news Jordan Elsass, who plays Jon Kent, wasn't coming back to the show for personal reasons. As such, the role is now being recast, leaving fans wondering who could fill these large boots. Jon, after all, was the emotional core of the series, impressing loyalists of the Superman mythos, an ever-changing Arrowverse, and critics alike.

Given he didn't have powers like Jordan (Alex Garfin) or his dad, Clark (Tyler Hoechlin), he added a grounded nature to the series, and ultimately, an important tie to mankind. However, his departure isn't going to be easy to pad at all. That's because, there's not just one gap, but two, that Season 3 will have to plug.

Jordan Elsass and Alex Garfin as brothers Jonathan and Jordon Kent on Superman & Lois

The first issue is how much Elsass carried the Super Sons' dynamic. Not to knock Garfin, but his overly angsty Jordan sometimes missed the mark, especially in the struggles to come off intimidating and badass. Sure, he was good at being whiny and also, at romantic pining for Sarah, but in terms of being a self-assured Superboy, his journey of self-discovery needed Jon to back him up. Where Garfin's Jordan fell short, though, Elsass' Jon picked up confidently, as seen by how he got Steel to save Superman when it seemed like they'd have to kill Kal-El.

His elevating presence appeared in many scenes, not just with Steel, but with Sam Lane and Lois too. Where Jordan's chemistry felt off with these seniors, Jon picked up the slack and gave the brothers a mature, believable voice. This synced the siblings better, showing one son fumbling around, and one a lot more comfortable in his own skin. This is why Jon's drug arc where the Kents reamed him stood out more than Jordan's training with Clark and Sam, and also, Jordan wanting to let Lana's family know the truth. Simply put, Jon could handle his arcs on his own, but Jordan really needed Jon to help his out.

It's in the latter, where both leaned on each other for support, it became truly clear how much their dialogue and overall energy relied on Elsass' talents. What compounded this was the jealousy shown by Jon towards Jordan, with a lot more emotion and range on display from the former. Thus, whoever comes in has to not only deliver for one role but two, pulling an extra load, because while Garfin's been improving, he's still not on Elsass' level.

Superman & Lois saw Jon become the evil Jon-El

But apart from balancing the Super Sons' bond in their day-to-day lives, the other potential problem that could crop up is if the new actor isn't capable of being an evil Jon. That's because his warped Superboy came over from Bizarro World and got imprisoned on the show's main Earth. Elsass, though, delivered gold with Evil Superboy, making fun of Jordan and also trying to kill the Kents.

It's not an easy thing to accomplish, because even if the new person pulls off the heroic side, there's no guarantee they can assume the evil side, which will be disappointing, as it seems like Evil Jon will factor in massively moving forward. This issue was already on display with fans recognizing how Garfin played the Bizzaro World's emo Jordan way better than the main Jordan, highlighting a disconnect that can happen if the actor isn't in their natural element. Ultimately, though, fans have trust in the Superman & Lois staff because they've usually nailed the casting, so let's hope the replacement Jon is someone who can, not only riff well with Garfin but evolve what Elsass did on two fronts to further enhance the legacy of the beloved show.
