SPOILER WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for “Superman” #47, on sale now.
Hordr_Root has been causing havoc for the Man of Steel since his debut in “Superman” #42. As the “Truth” arc that outed Superman’s identity to the world drew to a close today, we also learned something else from Gene Luen Yang, Howard Porter and Raymund Bermudez’s “Superman” #47 — the true identity of Hordr_Root. The man behind the mask is is the son of Vandal Savage.
After being possessed by Hordr_Root, Jimmy has a flashback to the villain’s creation. Though he isn’t given a name, the sequence reveals he is the wheelchair-bound son of Vandal Savage. Hordr_Root strives to win his father’s approval, even after Savage calls him “genetic refuse” and threatens to snap his neck. An accomplished hacker, Hordr_Root developed technology that would allow him to transfer his consciousness from one body to another so that he could finally impress Savage.
Unfortunately for Hordr_Root 1.0, the plan backfired on him. Once he transferred a copy of his consciousness into a cadaver, the new Hordr_Root made good on Savage’s promise and snapped the neck of his original form. Hordr_Root 2.0 then went on to both impress his father and win his approval.
It’s no surprise, then, that Savage comes to the rescue once Superman, Condesa and the gods trap Hordr_Root on a hard drive. Unable to voluntarily take a life, Superman left it in Mr. Terrific’s safekeeping, but not even Mr. Terrific could stand up to Savage’s might — which means Hordr_Root is back in his father’s clutches.
