It’s never been a better time to be a fan of superheroes. Not only are there more comics than ever, but they’ve made it outside just that medium to find a home everywhere. They’re in cartoons, they’re in multiple films a year, and there are more television series than we all know what to do with. This isn’t set to change any time soon, as Marvel and DC both have nearly a dozen television series coming over the next few years.

It fits, as much like television, superheroes were first made famous in a serial medium. If anything, they actually fit better on television than in films. But some characters, no matter how great they’d be for television, are simply much too expensive to be there. That’s where this list comes in. We look at characters who could be amazing on television but would cost far too much.

10 HAWKMAN

Yeah, anyone could do a Hawkman series that’s set in Hawkman’s “home city”, but that feels like such a waste. Carter Hall is basically DC’s version of Duncan McLeod. He’s been alive for millennia, lived countless lives across different eras of time, and a Hawkman show should focus on exactly that. It’s not that this series couldn’t be done, it’s that it would require set changes and costume design that only a show with a huge budget could ever hope to afford. The new comics reveal he had alternate lives on Krypton, for Rao’s sake.

9 CHAMPIONS

This up and coming group of heroes would catch on easily. Most of them are pretty lovable, and there’s a wide range of diverse people on the team that would appeal to today’s youth. The problem is...that’s just too many different kinds of powers and abilities. Legends of Tomorrow could barely do Firestorm most of the time ‘cause it was too expensive just having him hang out on seat all day. What are they supposed to do with Ms. Marvel, Vision, and Nova? Nevermind Ironheart, which would be like having Iron Man on a television show every week. While the villains could be kept down to Earth, the heroes sure wouldn’t be able to do the same.

8 FANTASTIC FOUR

Someone could figure out a low budget version of this, but that’s not what any Fantastic Four fan wants. We want the version where Marvel’s real First Family could go literally anywhere in the Marvel Multiverse. We want a place where they could be in the Microverse one episode, the Macroverse the next, and the Negative Zone for the finale.

A storyline where Annihilus or Galactus could show up to try and end Earth at a moment’s notice. That, plus even the films have barely figured out how the Thing is supposed to look, it’d be difficult to imagine a television show’s version.

7 THE NEW GODS

Death of the New Gods

This is supposedly getting a film and it has a talented creative cast behind it, but with WB’s track record as far as bringing superhero films from announcement to theatres, we’re not going to hold our breath for it. That said, how great of a show would this be. Imagine a series that’s about a war of two alien races—one on a world that looks like Heaven, the other...well, y’know. Highfather vs. Darkseid. The high concept of trading their sons for the hope of peace, only for both sons to wind up with New Genesis and Highfather. Mr. Miracle falling in love with Darkseid’s best warrior Big Barda. It’d all be wonderful...but just a tad too expensive to film.

6 AQUAMAN

Yes, there was supposed to be a series about Aquaman airing on CW following Smallville. It didn’t happen, but it was going to involve Arthur basically being on land most of the time in a normal city with incredible powers. ….What’s the point? There’s a lot to be said about the dialogue and the plotting of DC’s Aquaman film, but one thing that they nailed was the atmosphere of Atlantis. It was a beautiful locale, and it felt like this alien world nothing like our own even though it was as much a part of Earth as any other nation. That’s the feel Aquaman should be going for, and anything else is a waste of time.

5 GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

This one’s debatable. For anyone that’s both a fan of the old Guardians of the Galaxy comics and a fan of television sci-fi, there’s a small part in all of us that wants to see what sort of Jim Henson/Farscape-esque job someone could do with creating a version of Knowhere out in space. But that’s only one part of this. Animating a living tree, showing off powers like Adam Warlock or Quasar is the real challenge. And what about how they got together? In the comics, this involved a massive galactic war between Annihilus and the rest of the universe from the Kree and the Skrull to Galactus himself. They’d break the season bank just filming the opening few episodes.

4 X-MEN

Everyone wants to see the X-Men finally done right on film, but the truth is they’d be better on television. Gradually introducing the original group in the first season, the international group in the second, and maybe the New Mutants midway through the third. You could adapt most of what Chris Claremont did in the 70’s and 80’s and half the work is already done. But making the Sentinels work? Figuring out how to do Phoenix’s powers and not make them look corny? How you could deal with something like the Brood? This all sounds like a nightmare.

3 SPIDER-MAN

We all love Tom Holland and can agree he’s a fantastic Spider-Man. No one wants those films to end...but eventually they will, it’s the nature of things. But a Spider-Man television series would be fantastic. Starting with a sixteen-year-old Peter Parker, we could follow the character as he ages, watching his triumphs and tragedies.

The one big loss to Spider-Man in the films is the loss of the Daily Bugle and that rich cast, but a Spider-Man television would have no reason to skip that. Our one request? End the series before we have to do a Clone Saga.

2 GREEN LANTERN

Yes yes, we know it’s coming to HBO Max. It’s still way too expensive. Doing the series properly would wind up costing the same billion dollars Amazon Prime is going to spend on Lord of the Rings for the first five seasons. The only reason anyone even believes that has a chance of being good is it’s being done by HBO and it’s one of the premieres shows announced for their streaming service. But creating the constructs for multiple Lanterns, making the costumes feel like creations, and the countless different alien worlds, architecture, and races? Even the movies didn’t do this justice the first time, but seeing Green Lantern explore these different worlds would be awesome.

1 IRON MAN

We just said goodbye to Tony Stark in Avengers: Endgame, but this was always a character who would’ve been better as a television series than a film series. There’s just so much there to work with. Tony Stark the businessman, dealing with corporate espionage. Tony Stark the super-scientist, coming up with tech that revolutionizes the world. Tony Stark the superhero, who battles against everyone from the Mandarin to Ultimo. This would give us the chance to explore Tony’s flaws like alcoholism...and hopefully be the return of the classic armor briefcase.
