One of the most visible changes in Season 5 of Supergirl has been Kara Zor-El changing her look for the upcoming season, including sporting a new superhero uniform.
According to The CW series costume designer Victoria Auth, who joined the Arrowverse series for its fourth season, the decision was one made by the executive producers to increase the level of sophistication of its characters and design. The changes will be reflected in civilian costumes as well as the superhero ones throughout the season.
"The executive producers, Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller, wanted to move the whole show into a bit more of sophistication this year," explained Auth in an interview with Insider. "The civilian clothes have upgraded."
While initially considering hiding star Melissa Benoist's new haircut with a wig, the production designed against it to reflect the DCTV series' new visual sensibilities. The change was one that Benoist had wanted, with the new suit also containing its own abilities as seen in a trailer for Season 5.
"We did a lot of armies and that kind of thing last year, but they've been on a trajectory to give a little sophistication to Melissa, which she has wanted," Auth continued. "It sort of came hand in hand with taking her out of the cheerleading curb and moving her into something a little more action-oriented, cleaner silhouette."
Returning Sunday, Oct. 6 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW, Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers, David Harewood as Martian Manhunter, Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen and Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers.
