Supergirl showrunners Jessica Queller and Robert Rovner have explained why Alex told Kelly about Kara's secret identity off-screen following the Season 6 premiere.

“It was something that we had toyed about being able to do at the end of the first episode, but the story kind of -- we didn’t have the time in that episode to achieve that,” Rovner told The Wrap. “Because Kelly was fine with the news, we felt that we could integrate it into the story and that their relationship -- it was something that Kelly was going to be very supportive [of] and helping Alex cope with this. And some of it is explored in the next episode, when Alex is having a very difficult time.”

“And I’ll just add, we spent an entire season on when that news did not go well,” Queller continued, referring to the Season 5 storyline in which Lena turns against the Superfriends after Lex tells her the truth about Kara's secret identity before the latter does. “We felt like we really played that conflict last season.”

Played by Azie Tesfai, Supergirl's Kelly is Jimmy Olsen's sister and a former U.S. army soldier/psychologist who made her debut in Season 4. She would go on to begin dating Alex and was upgraded to series regular status in Season 5, playing a key role in the Obsidian North plot thread. In addition to returning for Season 6, Tesfai is the first Arrowverse actor to write an episode for one of The CW's DCTV shows, having penned the twelfth episode of Supergirl's final season with supervising producer J. Holtham.

In a separate interview with The Wrap, Tesfai agreed that Kelly would respond well to learning Kara was really Supergirl this whole time. “Kelly is so wonderful. I would’ve been angry, but she’s just such a dream girlfriend, you know? She gets it,” Tesfai said. “She gets everyone’s perspective on things, and she’s so kind and empathetic that [Alex and Kelly’s] relationship continues to be such a standard of healthy love that I think everything brings them closer together.”

Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers, David Harewood as Martian Manhunter, Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers, Nicole Maines as Dreamer, Jesse Rath as Brainiac-5, Azie Tesfai as Kelly Olsen, Julie Gonzalo as Andrea Rojas and Staz Nair as William Dey. New episodes premiere Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
