A new behind-the-scenes featurette for the upcoming "Supergirl" television series from the CW -- starring Melissa Benoist as the titular hero -- explains the secret origin of Kara Zor-El for those unfamiliar with the character.

For comic fans familiar with the character's origin, the basics all remain the same, in terms of modern continuity anyway. There's no off-shot Argo City whose soil turned into Kryptonite. Instead, Zor-El and Alura sent Kara off in her own rocket in order to watch over her baby cousin once they landed on Earth. However, Kara arrives much later than intended, and instead of baby Kal-El she discovers adult Superman.

In the comics, this late arrival gets explained in various ways depending on the writer but the featurette reveals that for the upcoming series, Kara's rocket accidentally gets sucked into the Phantom Zone -- a Phantom Zone that looks very, very similar to the one from the "Man of Steel" film.
