Supergirl has begun to assemble its own Legion of Super-Heroes with the addition of Brainiac 5.

According to TVLine, Defiance alum Jesse Rath has been added to the CW drama in a recurring role as the DC Comics hero, who possesses a 12th-level intellect. A longtime member of the Legion of Super-Heroes, in the comics Brainiac 5 long carried a flame for Supergirl, something co-showrunner Andrew Kreisberg suggests will carry over onto the television series.

Supergirl's version of the fan-favorite character is described as "half computer, half organic life," and a member of the Legion who travels from the 31st century to aid in the battle against Reign. He'll debut in the 10th episode of Season 3, aptly titled "Legion of Super-Heroes."

Introduced in 1961 by Jerry Siegel and Jim Mooney in Action Comics #276, Brainiac 5 is a native of the planet Colu, whose populace claims to descend from Superman's longtime enemy Brainiac. The character was previously portrayed in live-action on Smallville by James Marsters.

Airing Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW, Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist in the title role, David Harewood as Martian Manhunter, Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen, Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers, Chris Wood as Mon-El, Katie McGrath as Lena Luthor and Jeremy Jordan as Winn Schott.
