Supergirl star Melissa Benoist revealed that the series' final season will contain more sociopolitical messages.

While speaking to EW, Benoist was asked if Supergirl would continue to address such problems as the ecological crisis from last week's midseason premiere, "Welcome Back, Kara!" "Definitely," Benoist answered. "I've always believed our show was strongest when we did that. I think our story arc in Season 4 was really dealing with stories of immigration, and I was really proud of what we did then."

Benoist added that the series tackles these types of issues "head-on in a more subversive way this season," but that it is "a lot of exploration of power and what it means, how do you wield it well, how do you wield it for the wrongs reasons, and what happens when you do on both sides of heroes and villains." "I'm really proud of the way we've explored that this year," she concluded.

Among the issues Supergirl will delve into during its final season will be the Black Lives Matter movement, which will be the focus of the upcoming episode "Blind Spots." The episode will be directed by Arrow star David Ramsey and co-written by Benoist's costar Azie Tesfai, who plays Kelly Olsen. "Blind Spots" is set to air on The CW on Sept. 21 and will also see Kelly take up the Guardian mantle.

Supergirl airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on The CW.
