When news broke of Supergirl ending its run, Benoist shared a heartfelt message online, stating, "To say it has been an honor portraying this iconic character would be a massive understatement." The actor added, "Seeing the incredible impact the show has had on young girls around the world has always left me humbled and speechless. She's had that impact on me, too. She's taught me strength I didn't know I had, to find hope in the darkest of places, and that we are stronger when we're united. What she stands for pushes all of us to be better."

In 2015, Supergirl debuted on CBS and then moved -- unexpectedly at the time -- to The CW for its second season. The show initially focused on the life of Kara Danvers hiding her secret superhero identity from those she loved to growing into an icon of hope for National City alongside her adopted sister Alex (Chyler Leigh) and J'onn J'onzz.

In later seasons, the show evolved to battling the evils of humankind, tackling topics like xenophobia through writing episodes around alien refugees. Supergirl chose to uplift the voices of its characters and actors belonging to marginalized communities, such as Nicole Maines' Dreamer storyline battling transphobia. Leigh also praised the show's handling of Alex's coming-out storyline, citing it as inspiration for her own coming-out story.

Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers, David Harewood as Martian Manhunter, Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers, Nicole Maines as Dreamer and Jesse Rath as Brainiac-5. Season 6 premieres March 30 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
