A classic Man of Steel villain will be returning to Supergirl in Season 5. Thomas Lennon (Reno 911!, Veep) has been cast as Mr. Mxyzptlk, the fiendish and rather annoying imp from the Fifth Dimension. Mxyzptlk originally appeared in the series back in Season 2, where he was originally portrayed by Peter Gadiot.
According to Deadline, the role has been passed to Lennon and will mark an easy transition due to the character's history of shape-shifting and reality-bending powers. The imp has been a constant thorn in the side of Superman due to Kryptonian's weakness to magic. During the creature's previous visit to National City, his attempts to woo the hero instead resulted in nothing but chaos for Kara and company. This won't be Lennon's first foray into DC Comics, as he previously appeared in 2012's Dark Knight Rises and voiced Amazo on Justice League Action.
Mxyzptlk is one of DC's oldest villains, created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. His first appearance came in Superman #30 in 1944. With Supergirl and the rest of the Arrowverse still spinning from the events in "Crisis on Infinite Earths," it is unknown when exactly during Season 5 Lennon will appear as the character.
Airing Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW, Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers, David Harewood as Martian Manhunter, Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen and Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers.
