"Supergirl" Pilot Starts Production

With a photo of the clapperboard bearing a very familiar comic-book logo, Executive Producer Andrew Kreisberg this morning announced the official start of production of CBS's "Supergirl."

"'Supergirl' pilot production day one," tweeted Executive Producer Greg Berlanti, who wrote the pilot with Ali Adler. "So grateful and excited to have the cast and crew and fellow writers and director we have. Here we go!"

Hailing from Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television, which also produce The CW's "Arrow" and "The Flash," the "Supergirl" pilot is pegged as "a near-lock" for pickup by CBS. Based on the DC Comics property, the project centers on Kara Zor-El, who flees to Earth to escape the destruction of Krypton. After hiding her abilities for more than a decade, she decides to become the hero she was meant to be.

"Supergirl" stars Melissa Benoist as Kara, Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen, Laura Benanti as Alura Zor-El, Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, Chlyer Leigh as Supergirl's sister Alex, David Harewood as Hank Henshaw, Jeremy Jordan as Winslow Schott and Dean Cain and Helen Slater in unrevealed roles.

The pilot is directed by Glen Winter, a veteran of "Smallville," "Arrow" and "The Flash."
