The final episodes of Supergirl will explore the emotional fallout of Kara's time in the Phantom Zone.

Speaking with EW, lead actor Melissa Benoist revealed Supergirl's traumatic experience in the Kryptonian prison dimension will factor into her character arc as the series draws to a close. Praising the writers' room for the storytelling parallels with Season 1, she explained her emotional journey this year "circled back to Kara's origins of being stuck there for as long as she was as a child."

Benoist acknowledged Kara's reunion with her Kryptonian father Zor-El was "jarring" for the DC hero due to its association with the trauma she went through in the Phantom Zone -- first as a young girl and then again as a grown woman. Teasing what is to come of this internal conflict, she confirmed Kara's past "will definitely come back to haunt her" in some way before the show ends.

This is one of many developments the producers have in store for the final season. It was recently confirmed former series regulars Mehcad Brooks, Jeremy Jordan and Chris Wood will return for the series finale. This would mark Jordan and Wood's second appearances since leaving Supergirl, with both actors having previously reprised their roles as Winn Schott and Mon-El, respectively, to celebrate Supergirl's 100th episode in 2020.

While the Supergirl series is coming to an end, Kara's sister Alex Danvers will live on in the greater Arrowverse. Chyler Leigh is set to appear in her superhero guise as Sentinel in this year's pseudo-crossover taking place on The Flash. Alex will soon form one half of a superhero couple, with her girlfriend Kelly taking up the mantle of Guardian from her brother James Olsen.

Supergirl airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
