Nicole Maines is bringing Supergirl's Nia Nal/Dreamer character from TV into comics in an upcoming issue of Superman: Son of Kal-El.

DC announced that Maines, who played Nai Nal/Dreamer on CW's Supergirl, will be co-writing Superman: Son of Kal-El #13 with series writer Tom Taylor. The upcoming issue will see Dreamer fight alongside Jonathan Kent, Clark Kent's son who decided to pick up his father's cape and guard Metropolis from whatever threats may be out there. Dreamer previously appeared in a story Maines wrote for 2021's DC Pride #1, but Superman: Son of Kal-El #13 marks the character's first time entering the main DC Comics Universe continuity.

"Jon Kent and Nia Nal are two characters that have a lot in common, but as superheroes with the weight of the world on their shoulders, and as young people with impossibly big shoes to fill," Maines said. "Weaving their stories together for Superman: Son of Kal-El with Tom was a complete pleasure, and there is only a little pun intended when I say that Superman and Dreamer make for a brilliant new Dream-Team." Taylor agreed, "I'm so excited to work with Nicole Maines to bring Dreamer from the screen to the pages of Superman: Son of Kal-El and to the DC Comics Universe I want to thank all the people at DC who have championed Dreamer and who recognize the importance of this powerful trans superhero in this time."

Dreamer first appeared in "American Alien," the opening episode of Supergirl's fourth season. Nia is the first transgender superhero in a live-action adaptation, with Maines also being transgender. While Supergirl has finished its final season, Maines previously said it's not impossible for the character to return in CW's Arrowverse. "I mean, of course, if they asked if I wanted to do a Dreamer series, I'd say yes," Maines said. "That, for me, would be the ideal. But I think Dreamer is so great because, listen, having someone who can see the future is a valuable addition to any super team. I can't think of any superhero or crimefighter who would not benefit from maybe being able to see what's around the corner and having someone who has crazy awesome Oneiric blasts and shields and lassos and everything else Nia does -- summoning cougars, astral project, dream walk."

In Superman: Son of Kal-El #5, Jonathan Kent came out as bisexual and has since started dating Jay Nakamura. "There were a few different versions of it," artist Cian Tormey recently told CBR about the moment when Jonathan comes out to his mother, Lois Lane. "It's such a key moment. Obviously, this is something that [Taylor] has been building toward with the character for ages. Of course, this was something that we had to handle carefully. It's difficult when you are told, you've got one page, and you have to get all of this emotion. And I know that there are emotions that precede it -- we have pages before where we are setting up where we're going to go emotionally for this reveal."

Superman: Son of Kal-El #13 comes from Taylor, Maines and artist Clayton Henry, with cover art by Travis Moore and variant cover art by Henry and A.L. Kaplan. The issue goes on sale July 12 from DC.
