Kara Danvers has worn her classic comic book-faithful outfit for four seasons now on Supergirl, an easily recognizable look as it's identical to that of Superman's in terms of color and theme with a single exception: the skirt. Of course, that aspect of the costume is part and parcel of Supergirl's outfit because that's what her comic book counterpart has generally sported for decades -- but that's about to change in Season 5.
Melissa Benoist, who plays Supergirl on the CW, confirms to Kevin Smith at Twitch Prime's Apex Legends Crown Cup that her character is about to don a pair of pants in order to fight crime.
Asked about the costume change in Season 5, Benoist confirmed Supergirl will be given the new look, partly because it was impractical to have the actress shoot at night in freezing temperatures in a skirt. While Smith says he loves the current look, calling it "one of the greatest costumes in comics," he agreed that it was highly impractical.
As the two state in the interview, this isn't a sudden change. In the last season, Red Daughter, who wears similar costume but with a pair of pants, mocked Supergirl's fashion choices. There is an awareness within the universe about the impracticality of fighting evil in a skirt. So it appears that some time during the next season, Supergirl will take note from her former Russian adversary, hopefully helping the actress' experience on set.
Returning for its fifth season on Sunday, October 9 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW, Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers, David Harewood as Martian Manhunter, Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen and Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers.
