Supergirl’s Mon-El (Chris Woods) has gone through a few costume changes since the show’s debut, but now fans of the series have their first look at the hero’s most comics-accurate costume to date. Initially, the tease came in a promo for the CW’s midseason lineup, but now the network has released new images highlighting the Daxamite’s upgraded getup.

Mon-El’s new costume is the closest the show has got to a comics-accurate look for the character. Most recently, Mon-El wore a dark blue costume comprised of a futuristic jacket and pants. His new look harkens back to the character’s debut in comics, with a flowing blue cape and traditional red suit.

Created by Robert Bernstein and George Papp, Mon-El, also known as Lar Gand or Valor, debuted in Superboy #89 back in 1961. Mon-El was an ally of Superboy, until Superboy inadvertently poisoned the hero and, riddled with guilt, placed him in the Phantom Zone until a cure could be devised. That cure was eventually discovered a thousand years later, at which point Mon-El was released from the Phantom Zone and became a major force in the future peacekeeping organization called the Legion of Super-Heroes.
