Unlike Arrow and to some extent The Flash too, Supergirl has never been the kind of show that takes itself too seriously. Sure, it can get pretty intense, heartbreaking even, but in the midst of all the gloominess and tragedy, it knows when to stop and make a joke. The show has a couple of characters that act as comic reliefs, each in their own special, quirky and hilarious way. Cat Grant made us laugh with her snarky remarks, Winn Schott's awkwardness and nerdy jokes are always funny, and even Kara herself has been known to coax some laughs by simply being her adorable self.

Of course, even when the show is not exactly trying to be funny, the fans will sometimes find a way to make an otherwise serious or boring situation hilarious. It's been almost three years since we've embarked on this amazing journey with the Girl of Steel and in that time tones of memes have accumulated on the internet. Supergirl is already a very relatable show, even if it is about an alien with X-ray vision and super strength, and it should come as no surprise that a great number of these memes are very relatable as well.

21 SUCH A CARING BOSS

Supergirl Cat Grant Boss

Pretty much all of us had to deal with a difficult boss at least once. This traditionally tends to happen at the start of a young person’s promising career. If for no other reason than because the universe thinks we all need someone to constantly push as down as we struggle to live marginally successful lives. Certainly, most of us could relate to Kara during season one, as she attempted to develop a somewhat normal relationship with her boss, Cat Grant.

Cat, as we all know, is not one to hold back and speaks her mind freely with no regard for other people's feelings. Well, at least to some extent. This interaction perfectly sums up what it’s like to have Cat Grant for a boss. Although, she did show her soft side later, which made us love her even more.

20 MONE-EL FOUND HIS CALLING

Supergirl Mon-El Haiku

Haikus and limericks are pretty the two forms of poetry that are guaranteed to pique the interest of even the fiercest poetry haters. Today, haikus are becoming increasingly popular, usually for the purpose of telling some kind of a joke. The YouTuber Jacksfilms often creates videos consisting of all kinds of haikus he writes based on his audience’s suggestions. But, haikus have also found their way into the ever-evolving world of memes.

A clever comedian decided to use one of Mon-El’s lines to deliver his own take on the classic Roses are red/Violets are blue haiku. However, we could easily imagine Mon-El discovering haikus and going around talking in haikus for one whole episode. Perhaps, once things get back to normal, if they ever do, we can have that episode.

19 THAT’LL GET THEIR ATTENTION

Supergirl Crush

Starring at your crush incessantly only works if you’re Bella Swan and your crush is Edward Cullen. Normally, in real life, the person would be far more likely to get creeped out than to actually fall in love with you. But we’re not here to discuss the inadequacies of Twilight, no one’s got that much time to waste.

But, we can all relate to having a crush on someone who doesn’t feel the same way. Newsflash, it sucks. One of the defining characteristics of crushing on someone is the nagging tendency to steal glimpses at the person whenever the situation allows for it. Here’s a meme demonstrating how Supergirl deals with unrequited love. Not that we’re suggesting you should follow in her example. That would probably do you more harm than good.

18 KAL-WHO?

Supergirl Kara Kal

From this point in time, Smallville doesn’t seem like such a tough act to follow. However, back when Supergirl was getting off the ground there was a lot of pressure on this show to perform because it had to live up to Smallville's legacy. On the other hand, the writers couldn’t just tell the same story only with a female protagonist. Fans of Smallville as well as the Arrowverse shows anticipated Supergirl’s arrival with hope and skepticism.

In a delightfully punny way this hilarious meme sums up Kara’s thoughts on her cousin and his little show. Luckily, Supergirl turned out to be a surprisingly delightful show, that keeps on getting better each season. Not only did Supergirl live up to Smallville’s legacy, it is even better than its predecessor.

17 THEY GROW UP SO FAST

Supergirl Kara Barry Glee

In a special musical episode of The Flash titled "Duet," Kara and Barry were visited by an extra-dimensional being Music Meister, played by Glee actor Darren Criss. Music Meister put the whammy on Kara and Barry, transporting them into an alternate reality where life is like a musical and to escape they had to sing and dance their way out.

This was Arrowverse's way of paying homage to Glee. Because, you see, before they became superheroes, both Kara and Barry used to be members of the glee club, which fans love pointing out. Grant Gustin and Melissa Benoist both made appearances on Glee and they were part of rival glee clubs. Fans of both shows created a lot of hilarious memes about these two singers-turned superheroes. This one seems to say, look how grown up they are now.

16 WINN FOR THE WIN

Supergirl Mon-El Winn

Clueless Mon-El was a priceless treasure indeed. During Mon-El’s first days on Earth, Winn decided to give his new buddy a few pointers to help him in his everyday interactions with earthlings, namely women from Earth. Talk about the blind leading the blind. As a joke - or perhaps not, Winn told Mon-El that a proper way to refer to a beautiful woman on Earth is by calling her ‘babe’.

Poor Mon-El took the advice seriously, which led to this hilarious scene. We’re sensing both Mon-El and Kara had some words to exchange with Winn afterwards. We're pretty sure Mon-El won't be going to Winn for advice on women anymore. And, no offense Mr. Schott, but you can’t exactly consider yourself an authority on the subject.

15 ARROWVERSE: CIVIL WAR

Supergirl Flash Arrow

Captain America: Civil War is a very memeable movie. At times we think Marvel writes these scenes this way because they want the memes to be created. But, that’s a discussion for another day. Circling back to Captain America: Civil War, there’s a scene in the movie when Steve tries to explain why he’s siding with Bucky by stating that Bucky is his friend. Tony takes offense at this, remarking that he too was Steve’s friend at one time. And the rest as they say is history.

The Avengers are divided into two groups and face off in an epic battle on the airport. Seems like the Arrowverse is heading in a similar direction. The new girl on the block -- Supergirl is stirring up trouble between Flash and Green Arrow. Arrowverse: Civil War, coming soon.

14 WHAT'S MY NAME AGAIN?

Supergirl Felicity

The similarities between Felicity Smoak and Kara Zor-El are not hard to spot. In fact, Felicity herself remarked upon meeting Kara for the first time that it felt like looking into a mirror. Just to be clear, we are talking about the season one Felicity and not the new sultry version. When she first appeared on Arrow, Felicity was a nerdy IT girl who wore glasses and clothes similar to what Kara’s wearing on Supergirl.

Not to mention that both women are blonde and... well that’s really where the similarities stop. Still, it’s hard to look past the fact that these two do indeed kind of look and act similar, which is why the fans felt the need to point out these similarities with a meme.

13 THAT MOMENT WHEN WE WERE ALL ALEX

Family reunions can be extremely stressful. There’s always a certain amount of pressure on you to show how much you’ve succeeded in life, whether it’s about your professional or personal affairs. It’s always the same questions. So, how’s work? Did you get a promotion? Did you get that interview? What happened to that guy you talked about? Did you ask out that girl from work? When will you get married? And so on and so forth.

In order to survive the ordeal, most of us puny humans succumb to indulgence -- and admittedly, at times, overindulgence in alcohol. So, when we watched Alex Danvers sip that wine like her life depended on it during a family dinner, we could easily relate to what she was going through.

12 JUST BE COOL

Supergirl Arrow Flash Hug

The Arrowverse crossovers are a wonderful thing indeed. Last year’s "Crisis on Earth-X" was arguably the best Justice League movie of the year, even without a single member of the Trinity. However, while it was amazing to watch all these heroes kick Nazi keister, it was equally enjoyable to watch them all just be friends. It’s one of the things we love about the Arrowverse - its sometimes cartoonish, but nevertheless endearing, approach to friendship.

These heroes are not working together merely out of convenience, they’re committed to being there for each other because they’re also good friends. Well, at least that’s what their interactions would have us believe. Another possibility, as the meme suggests, is that the guys are just too afraid of Kara not to be friends with her.

11 CAT GRANT'S NEW ASSISTANT

Supergirl James Cat Phone

Cat Grant can definitely act like a real dive at times. In season one episode "Manhunter," poor James Olsen was left to fend for himself against Cat Grant. With both Kara and Siobhan out of the office, as well as Winn who had gone after the latter, James was left playing assistant to Cat. The phone starts ringing and Cat merely glares at James indicating that he should be the one to pick up.

With an exasperated look on his face, James Olsen -- in complete disbelief as to what his life has come to -- picks up the phone from Cat’s desk. It was such a simple scene, yet it conveyed so much. The way she just assumes that James will now essentially be her temporary assistant without so much as batting an eyelash is hilarious.

10 GLEE CLUB VS. SUPERHERO TEAM

Supergirl Flash Glee

When it was announced that Grant Gustin will be making a guest appearance on CBS’s Supergirl series, starring Melissa Benoist in the titular role, Glee fans were delighted about this small reunion. Both actors had previously appeared on the FOX series Glee, which revolved around the members of -- yes, you guessed it -- a glee club.

And, of course, the internet has provided us with a plethora of memes about Barry and Kara’s singing high school days. The hilarious meme above shows Barry and Kara complaining about the differences between being in Glee Club and being on a Superhero Team. Either that or Barry is trying to teach Kara how to dab. Seriously, what the hell is Grant Gustin doing on this photo?

9 WHEN YOU LET YOUR FRIEND PICK OUT YOUR OUTFIT

Supergirl Costume

Picking out a good costume is the most important part of being a superhero. Well, maybe not the most important, but it’s certainly in the top five. If you want to be taken seriously you have to look the part. Kara knows this and that’s precisely why she vehemently refused Winn’s initial design. She looked so uncomfortable and awkward in that costume, it made us feel awkward too.

A fan of the show thought this scene resembled that very bad, terrible situation when a friend wants to pick out an outfit for you to wear. No one likes being put into this position, because most often than not you end up not looking like yourself and feeling extremely awkward. In the end, nothing good ever comes out of it.

8 SUPERGIRL FANS AT THE MOMENT

Supergirl Sanvers Sam Alex

The Sanvers breakup caused a lot more than just two broken hearts. Alex and Maggie quickly became everyone’s favorite couple, possibly in the entire Arrowvers, and when the show decided to break them up in season three, we were utterly crushed. And despite slim chances that Floriana Lima will return in a way that allows Maggie and Alex to get back together, we’re still holding out hope for Sanvers.

Although, recent developments with Alex and Sam made us ponder the possibility of a new ship. This hilarious meme is a very apt description of what went through our minds while watching that one particular episode of Supergirl. Funnily enough, shipping Alex with Sam -- or anyone else -- kind of feels like cheating on Sanvers and yet we just can't help ourselves.

7 ON-POINT AS ALWAYS

Supergirl Cat Grant Truth

Cat Grant has the best one-liners across the Arrowverse, which is just one of the reasons we miss her so much. During the first Supergirl and The Flash crossover episode, Cat made a number of awesome in-jokes, but this one has to be our favorite. In the truest Cat Grant fashion, she called out The CW for its tendency to cast a sexy diverse cast in every show. Not that this is a bad thing, but it has turned into a growing trend.

Cat’s fourth-wall-demolishing line upon meeting Barry Allen for the first time had us laughing out loud, while our brains went through all The CW shows we’ve ever watched to check the validity of her statement. And lines like these are reason number one why we need Cat Grant to come back.

6 HOW TO HIDE YOUR IDENTITY

Supergirl Glasses

Has it been too long to keep complaining about Instagram’s not-so-new, new logo? Probably, but we’re just gonna do it anyway. To put it simply, it’s unimaginative. Especially when compared to the previous retro design. Not to mention that it almost doesn’t even look like the Instagram we know. Which brings us to the real point, i.e. how to successfully hide your identity as told by Clark Kent and Kara Danvers.

Apparently, all those other heroes running around in silly masks are just making fools out of themselves. There is no need for domino or full-face masks. Not when you can just disguise yourself while in your civilian persona and with glasses of all things. If there are any aspiring heroes out there, perhaps this is something to consider.

5 TOO HIGH

Too Many Supergirls

Before Melissa Benoist became the Girl of Steel that honor belonged to Laura Vandervoort who portrayed the character on Smallville. However, years before either of these young ladies got the chance to portray Supergirl, the actress Helen Slater played Kara Zor-El in the 1984 Supergirl movie. Both Laura Vandervoort and Helen Slater have made guest appearances on Supergirl.

Over the course of three seasons, Supergirl paid homage to the movies and television shows that paved its way. In the first season episodes "Myriad" and "Better Angels," the show featured not one, not two, but three Supergirl actresses. Laura Vandervoort appeared as Braniac 8, aka Indigo, while Helen Slater made an appearance as Eliza Davers, Alex’s mother. And no matter what the meme says, you can never have too many Supergirls.

4 THAT MOMENT WHEN MON-EL WAS ONE OF US

Supergirl Mon-El Fangirl

Say what you want about Mon-El, but he did have his moments. Taking a character and placing him in a foreign world which he knows nothing about pays off more often than it doesn’t. Just look at the number and popularity of isekai anime. For Mon-El the Earth was this foreign, exotic, unexplored place he had so much to learn about.

In episode seventeen of season two, Mon-El mentions he’s been reading Romeo and Juliet, and compares his relationship with Kara to the star-crossed lovers. This hilarious meme tells the story of Mon-El the RomeoxJuliet shipper. After being thoroughly heartbroken by the book’s tragic ending, Mon-El -- like any other shipper out there -- found fanfiction to mend his broken heart. Certainly, this is something we can all relate to.

3 GO BACK TO YOUR EARTH BARRY

Supergirl Kara Barry

The Arrowverse owes quite a lot to Smallville. When The CW first started developing Arrow it was imagined as a Smallville spin-off. Ultimately, it was decided to start from scratch, but Smallville laid the groundwork. It's true that Arrow was under a lot of pressure to live up to its predecessor’s legacy, but Supergirl was under even more pressure given that Clark is Kara's cousin and all.

Luckily, Supergirl surpassed our expectations and Kara managed to get out of her cousin’s shadow. But, just when she thought she could relax a speedster from a different Earth no less comes and steals the spotlight from her once again. The show may have painted a pretty picture about Kara and Barry, but the internet knows how their encounter really went down.

2 THE ONLY REASONABLE EXPLANATION

Supergirl Lena Luthor

We're gonna go out on the limb and say that Lena Luthor was not the most popular girl in school. Being a nerd was probably more than enough, but on top of that she was also a Luthor, and we’re willing to bet her fellow classmates didn’t exactly line up to be her friends.

Being the awkward nerdy kid that perhaps only has one friend is probably something most of us can relate to. So, we can’t blame Lena for wanting to believe that she now has two friends. This meme is by far the best explanation we found for why Lena hasn’t yet figured out that Kara is Supergirl. She’s a genius for crying out loud! No matter how you spin it, she should have realized it by now, unless she’s going along with the lie because she just wants to have two friends.
