Supergirl's Melissa Benoist, who plays the titular character of the show, directed the most recent episode, "Deus Lex Machina." Although "terrified" of calling the shots from the director's chair, Benoist knew how she wanted to approach the story dynamics of the episode; in particular a key scene between Lena Luthor and Kara Danvers.

Wanting to imprint a layer of subtext into the scene where Lena offers Kara her condolences, Benoist informed TVLine, "There’s a lot of subtext in that scene. It’s the first time they’ve spoken this way in a while, since Supergirl told Lena that she’s going to treat her like a villain if she acts like one. So things have been said between them."

Benoist explained how the tentativeness that is infused concealed a lot between the two characters and their relationship, and that even she isn't sure if they know how they feel about each other. "They miss each other, they miss that friendship, and that comes through in the scene, but there’s still anger. What’s also not being said in that scene is that they’re not ready to forgive.”

Airing Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW, Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers, David Harewood as Martian Manhunter and Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers.
