As played by Katie McGrath, "Supergirl's" version of Lena Luthor has taken over her brother Lex's company and has proven herself to be one of the most morally complex characters on the show. A recurring guest star, Lena has struggled with her family as well as the public's perception of her over the course of several episodes. According to TVLine, Season 3 will have a lot more Luthor, as McGrath has been promoted to a series regular.

Throughout Season 2, Lena has been an adversary of her far more villainous mother, but she has nurtured some evil plots of her own. In true Luthor style, both she and her mother think of themselves as the hero of their own stories. Lena has also befriended Supergirl's mild-mannered alter ego Kara Danvers, which adds a time-honored superhero plot device to the series. McGrath's promotion to series regular means their friendship will get a chance to really thrive, even as Lena attempts to defy the expectations everyone puts on her because of her more notorious family members.

McGrath also praised her character, saying, "She’s honest, she’s true to Kara, she’s true to her friends... She keeps trying, in the face of all the things that people keep throwing at her. She’s defying them!”
