As most of the various Arrowverse shows have returned from their midseason breaks this month, and thus transferred into the new year, one thing on most fans minds is what the crossover of 2018 will be.

Now that all the shows are interlinked -- save for Black Lightning, of course, though that could happen later -- the real fun of the crossovers is more about just watching these characters that we know and love bounce off the characters from sister shows for a few hours. 2017's "Crisis on Earth-X" realized this, and in turn delivered some of the best character moments that have ever existed in the whole enterprise.

To date, however, each of the crossovers have taken place on Earth-1, even after Supergirl migrated over to CW. If the network wants to keep things moving along properly as the crossover get bigger and better every year, there's one way to do it: base 2018's crossover on Earth-38, Supergirl's world.

Because Supergirl originally aired on CBS, it had to take place in a separate universe from the CW's DCTV shows. The only time an Arrowverse character interacted with her world in her first season was when the Flash quite literally ran into her universe and hung around for a few days. Even now that she's officially a part of The CW's line-up, it's made sense to have her jump to Earth-1 for crossovers. After all, compared to the two dozen or so cast members that encompass Arrow, Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow, it's much easier to bring Kara and an extra friend over to the more populated universe than the other way around.

Still, since "Crisis" showed that alternate realities are certainly fair game for these mega-events, it's only logical to have the next yearly superhero melee centered around Kara's neck of the woods. In 2016's "Invasion!" event, Barry promised Kara that if she ever needed help from him or any of the other Arrowverse characters, all she had to do was hop over to their universe and give them a ring. Nothing's come of that yet, which will make the moment that it does happen all the more important. Even with two Kryptonians in Supergirl's universe, there are a multitude of threats that would require Kara to send out the call to Teams Arrow, Flash and Legends for some additional metahuman firepower.

Shifting the focus to Kara's world would benefit the Arrowverse in two ways. First, despite watching Supergirl for three years, we still don't really have any idea of what Earth-38 is actually like beyond National City. Aside from the obvious inclusion of the Supers and possibly Batman, there's no tangible difference between this and Earth-1; it's not like Earth-2's retro-futurist aesthetic, or how the Nazis won the war on Earth-X. The previous crossovers may have just reused Star and Central City as their settings over and over, sure, but the shows themselves have made an active effort to give us a proper idea of what the outside world is like in reaction to so many metahumans and costumed crusaders running around. Fleshing out Kara's world is something the show really needs, even if that just means something as simple as taking place in another state on Earth-38.

It also would allow for us to get payoff to a lingering thread previously mentioned in both Supergirl and "Crisis on Earth-X." When Barry first met Kara, he asked if any of his friends existed in her world, and the implication there is that they either flat out don't exist at all, or lead relatively mundane lives. In Crisis, it's established that one of everybody exists on each separate Earth, and that's too good an opportunity to pass up for some character developing moments. Arrow, Flash and Legends have all experimented with alternate versions of beloved characters; Legends' case, time travel exists for them to tap into that on a weekly basis. Earth-38 would be as good a way as any to shine that sort of spotlight on actors who haven't had the chance to do so, such as Heatwave, Wild Dog, or Zari.

If there's a problem that bringing over the other Arrowverse shows into Supergirl's territory might highlight, it's that this whole enterprise is largely made up of dudes. That's just the fact of the matter, and the best way to swiftly and naturally address it would just be to develop a story that includes a reason why most of them don't show up, similar to how Crisis benched Vibe and Kid Flash for most of the event. The number of guys for who it would really make sense for it to crossover is fairly small -- Barry, Ollie, Ray, Cisco and, from the Legends, Mick. It would also be a good an opportunity shine the spotlight on the various women across Arrow, Flash and Legends to hang out on Kara's world and beat up some bad guys alongside Kara, Alex and possibly Saturn Girl or Reign, if both women make it past the current season.

Since Kara's inclusion into the Arrowverse, the CW has made sure to showcase that she is one of the Core Five alongside Barry, Ollie, Ray and Sara. As one of those core characters, she deserves to have the character spotlight that the crossovers have granted Ollie and Barry in the past. She more than deserves it, and it's doubtful that many would complain at the idea of her taking charge of a threat that looms over her reality. These yearly hangouts are going to keep happening, and if they're going to continue being character focused, that means giving each of them their own time to be the leader, a role that the Girl of Steel has proved she's more than ready to take on.
