Supergirl has a new Guardian. In "Blind Spots," the upcoming 12th episode of the Arrowverse series, Azie Tesfai's Kelly Olsen will step into the shield her brother Jimmy left behind and become a vigilante in her own right.

In the photo, Kelly wields the iconic Guardian shield -- with a twist. Although Jimmy's costume was steel, Kelly's Guardian armor is decked out in gold, with a metal helmet and metallic accents on her collar, shoulders, forearms, belt and calves. This contrasts with the rest of her costume, which appears to be a tactical black top and pants.

In addition to debuting as Guardian, "Blind Spot" will mark Tesfai's first outing as a writer on the series. She co-wrote the episode with co-producer J. Holtham, with Arrow alum David Ramsey on board to direct and reprise his role as John Diggle. Airing Sept. 21, the episode will also address racial inequality.

"It's been great, I think, the nuance of not just representing the Black voice, but the Black female voice, and every Black experience is different," Tesfai told Entertainment Weekly in February. "To have David Ramsey directing the episode... that makes me really excited. Ramsey and I had dinner the other night and just talking about his perspective and experiences; they're very different than mine. So, I think to have such a well-balanced [group] between me, J., who I'm writing the episode with, and David Ramsey, I think fans will feel really excited and hopefully seen and heard... [Episode] 12, in my opinion, for Kelly, is the most epic episode of the season, so I'm excited to get to pen it."

Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers, David Harewood as Martian Manhunter, Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers, Nicole Maines as Dreamer, Jesse Rath as Brainiac-5, Azie Tesfai as Kelly Olsen, Julie Gonzalo as Andrea Rojas and Staz Nair as William Dey. The series will air its next episode on May 11 on The CW, then return Tuesday, Aug. 24 at 9 p.m. ET/PT to finish out the season.
