Future State will see many changes to the DC Universe, including a shakeup in the Superman Family's dynamic.

Superman group editor Jamie S. Rich said that newly minted Superman Jon Kent and Supergirl would be at odds during Future State. In the process, Supergirl will also undergo a change of her own.  "Supergirl is there to question him and challenge him and also maybe be like, 'Wait a minute. I am as powerful as my cousin. I am as powerful as Clark. Why am I not the one who gets the cape?' There's a lot of cool family drama in there," Rich told IGN.

Future State features Jon taking up the mantle of Superman after his father Clark departs the planet. When a new villain named Brain Cells arrives, Jon is forced to use the same technology that Brainiac used to miniaturize Kandor on Metropolis. Given that Supergirl is the sole survivor of Kandor, it makes sense that she would feel uncomfortable with Jon's decision.

The other members of the Superman Family will be facing their own issues. Clark Kent has become a gladiator on the planet of Warworld, while Conner Kent is leading the Suicide Squad on Earth-Three.

DC Future State begins in January 2021 from DC and will last for two months.
