In last night's Supergirl season 4 finale, Jon Cryer's Lex Luthor launched his final assault against Supergirl and was ultimately killed.

In a Twitter post after the episode, Cryer thanked the fans for accepting his portrayal of Lex Luthor -- despite many people, himself included, thinking that he was an odd choice for the role.

After this initial post, Cryer went on to thank the fans who gave him this chance to po0rtray a character unlike any he had played before and said that he was "grateful you let me let him out."

While Jon Cryer was regarded as an unusual choice to play one of DC's most infamous villains, he had a previous connection to the role in the Superman mythos, since he portrayed Lex Luthor's nephew Lenny in Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. Ironically, the Supergirl season 4 finale was also titled “The Quest for Peace."

"The reason I joined Superman IV was because the Superman movie," Cryer previously admitted before saying he was hurt that the fourth movie was a disappointment for most people. "I feel like [Supergirl] was my chance to reclaim it and do it more justice, or injustice as it were."

While Jon Cryer's Lex Luthor seemed to face a clear defeat, the Supergirl season 4 finale also left the door open for him to possibly return in the future, possibly as soon as the Crisis on Infinite Earth crossover event.

Airing next season on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW, Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers, David Harewood as Martian Manhunter, Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen and Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers.
