SPOILER WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for “Battles Won and Lost,” the Season 3 finale of Supergirl.
The jig is up! The news is out! The world of Supergirl now knows that James Olsen is the Guardian. In "Battles Won and Lost," the Season 3 finale, he confessed the truth to the public.
When the Dark Kryptonians attempted to terraform Earth, National City was sent into crisis. Naturally, Guardian took to the streets to help civilians escape crumbling buildings. As he cleared one building, though, a panicked mother attempted to reenter it to save her son. In order to convince her to stay outside, James removed his mask and reassured her. This tactic worked, and he was able to save her son without incident.
That moment stirred something in James, which had been brewing since the Season 3 episode "The Fanatical." He later confessed to Winn that he enjoyed that moment of human connection, that -- in revealing his face -- he could help more than he had ever before. So, when word got out to the press that he was Guardian, he didn't deny it. "I do have a statement," he told one reporter over the phone. "I am the Guardian."
At the end of the episode, as Alex and Kara relaxed on the couch in her studio apartment, the TV ran a breaking news segment about the Guardian. The clip superimposed a picture of James and Guardian side-by-side, announcing that they were indeed one and the same. In Season 4, then, it seems James will have to grapple with his identity being made public.
Returning to The CW this fall, Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist as the Girl of Steel, David Harewood as Martian Manhunter, Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen, Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers and Jeremy Jordan as Winn Schott, with appearances by Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant and Tyler Hoechlin as Superman.
