The following contains major spoilers for Dark Crisis #1, available now from DC Comics.

Supergirl makes an appearance in the recently released Dark Crisis #1 as one of the frontliners of Jonathan Kent's new Justice League, wearing a refined, beautiful costume.

Kara Zor El's costumes throughout the years, ranging from her various comic iterations to her 1984 film and recent television series, have typically all incorporated short skirts or leotards. For a period in the 1970s and '80s, she even alternated between wearing hot pants and a headband. Her outfit in Dark Crisis, however, is a full-body suit with a high collar, a golden waist girdle and stylized lines along the torso, legs and boots. The suit not only embodies a sleeker, slightly more futuristic Kryptonian aesthetic than her usual wear, but it also brings her appearance more in line with Jon Kent, her cousin once removed.

Supergirl shows off her sleek new costume alongside other members of Jon Kent's new Justice League, from Dark Crisis #1.

While this is the first appearance of the suit in mainstream continuity, Kara's new look actually debuted in the final pages of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, an 8-issue limited series written by Tom King and illustrated by Bilquis Evely. The series focused on Kara undergoing a cosmic journey of growth and self-discovery shortly after her 21st birthday, ending with her gaining a new sense of purpose. Dark Crisis references this experience as Jon Kent asks Kara to join his new Justice League, with Kara expressing doubts at first and murmuring: "I don't know... I just got back."

Along with the son of Superman himself, Kara Zor-El is one of the most powerful faces on Jon's motley crew. Other members of the new League include Aqualad, two Blue Beetles, Booster Gold, Dr. Light, Frankenstein, Harley Quinn, Killer Frost and Robin.

Kara and Jon are likely to have their work cut out for them, considering that Dark Crisis features a world in chaos following the apparent death of the Justice League at the hands of Pariah's Dark Army. While the Leaguers are actually trapped within alternate reality prisons, Jon can only assume the worse and hopes to bring together a new generation of heroes in their absence. Unfortunately, prominent members of the superhero community all turn him down, including Black Adam, Jace Fox -- the Batman of New York City -- and Yara Flor, also known as Wonder Girl. Kara, Jon and the rest of their hastily-assembled team must now stand united against a host of villains led by Deathstroke, who attacks Titans Tower in the finale of Dark Crisis #1.

Dark Crisis #1 comes from writer Joshua Williamson, artist/cover artist Daniel Sampere, colorist/cover artist Alejandro Sánchez, letterer Tom Napolitano and variant cover art by Greg Capullo, Jonathan Glapion, Dave McCaig, Jamal Campbell, Inhyuk Lee, Bruno Redondo, Dan Schoening, Steve Beach, Mahmud Asrar, Nathan Fairbairn, Jim Lee, Scott Williams and Alex Sinclair. The issue is on sale now from DC.
