WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Challenge of the Super Sons #2 by Peter J. Tomasi, Max Raynor, on sale now.

With the Justice League in danger from a magical scroll capable of killing whoever's name is written in it, the race was on to keep the DC Universe's greatest heroes alive. Jon Kent and Damian Wayne are the only ones that can stop it but in the course of their latest adventure, the Super Sons unearth a relic of DC's past in the form of the Supermobile, Superman's temporary form of transportation and combat. While the design may be a bit silly (it has fists), the boys put it to effective use in saving the Flash from certain death.

In Challenge of the Super Sons #2, Superboy and Robin return from an as-of-yet unseen adventure, where they apparently learned about the mechanics of the Doom Scroll. It seems that whenever someone's name is added, they have an hour before that person is killed, and all they have to go on is a single clue. So when the Flash's symbol cropped up while being struck by lightning, it didn't take the boys long to figure out the who and how.

What did give them pause was how to get there on time. Superboy could easily fly there himself, but Robin wouldn't survive the trip at those speeds and so they needed an alternative way to get there. While it's clear that Jon wouldn't be able to handle it by himself, it was Jon who came up with the solution, taking Damian to S.T.A.R. Labs to reveal to him the Supermobile. Damian, being Damian, laughed, but agreed to take the ship to Central City alongside Jon. Though he made fun of the vehicle, it did prove extremely useful, having been built to withstand intense solar radiation and fly through space, it was undoubtedly key in getting both boys there just in time. It even provided a countdown for the Flash's impending doom. So while the boys pursued Flash high in the clouds, Damian worked to figure out how to save him.

Realizing that they didn't have much time, the Son of Batman ran through the calculations to actually predict where the lightning would strike. Finding the answer, he handed Jon a rod from the Supermobile, intending for his half-Kryptonian friend to act as a lightning rod and absorb the blast. Trusting his friend, Jon intervened just before the lightning struck, but taking the brunt of the blow knocked him out. But Damian managed to catch him with the Supermobile's hands. Turns out they can unclench.

The Supermobile was never intended to be a permanent part of the DC Universe, when it was first introduced it was at the behest of a toy company trying to sell a new product line. DC Comics has some inventive writers though and Cary Bates came up with the solution of having the Supermobile be a kind of armor for Superman. Not in a literal sense, but in the event the Man of Steel was ever powerless, he could always hop into the Supermobile, which would mimic all of his abilities.

Currently, the Supermobile was built by S.T.A.R. Labs to protect Superman from absorbing direct radiation from Earth's sun while taking solar samples. So while it does protect Superman, it doesn't have nearly as much power, which didn't seem to matter this time. The ship was more than capable of keeping up with Superboy in flight and gave Damian enough wiggle room to come up with a solution thatt not only saved the Flash's life, but Superboy's as well. If Damian decides to keep it, a simple paint job could give him a potential Robinmobile.
