Monumental sandbox game Minecraft is about to take over the Smash Bros. scene. Steve & Alex will be joining the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster on October 13, but we already know plenty about how the character plays. Director Masahiro Sakurai walked players through a massive, 45-minute video presentation breaking down Steve & Alex's moveset and special abilities.

Steve is perhaps one of the most unique and complex fighters to grace any Smash Bros. roster. All variants play identically, but there's tons to learn even before players even pick up their controllers. Fortunately for Minecraft fans, it looks as though they've successfully captured the spirit of the game.

Sword Attacks

Minecraft Steve in Smash Bros.

Like any other fighter, Steve has a set of normal moves triggered by using the A button. These primarily make use of Steve's wooden sword, which has the ability to be upgraded all the way up to a diamond sword. The sword is used for neutral moves, including a running attack that is done by holding down the A button and walking forward or backward.

Side Smash attacks use whatever sword Steve has equipped. Players should be careful, though, since Steve's sword will eventually break. He will be able to craft another one later, but his damage output will be greatly diminished until then. Steve also has access to a pickaxe and ax, which also have their own durability and can also be upgraded and used to attack.

Special Attacks

Minecraft Steve in Smash Bros.

Most fighters' special attacks aren't that complicated, but Steve may have the most overwhelming ones yet. Due to his weak jump, Steve has been given a neutral B special that creates a solid crafting block while he's in the air. A block will not appear if he is standing on solid ground. Holding down the B button and walking in either direction will cause Steve to build a bridge of blocks underneath his feet.

Using this special will drain Steve's resources, and the blocks will also disintegrate quickly, so players will need to stay on the move to stay afloat. It functions as a great recovery move, as players can continuously jump and create blocks underneath their feet as long as Steve has crafting materials. The block will vary in makeup depending on what materials Steve has available in his inventory.

Neutral B has two more functions depending on where Steve is positioned. If standing on solid ground, Steve can mine crafting materials from beneath his feet. These can be used to craft weapons and build blocks, as well as several other moves. To craft items, players can position Steve in front of a crafting table to use the Craft ability, which is also activated with neutral B.

Players can upgrade their weapons or craft new ones to replace the ones that have broken during battle. Crafting tables can be destroyed, but Steve can build a new one wherever he is standing and use it right away. Upgraded weapons are more durable and have a slight increase in their damage output.

Steve's side special is a rush attack in the form of a minecart. The fighter will rapidly build tracks out of crafting materials as he glides across the stage and knocks fighters out of his way. If Steve runs out of materials, the minecart will come to a screeching halt. Steve can also jump out of the minecart while propelled forward and also catch other fighters in it. This can result in enemy fighters being thrown off the stage to their deaths.

Up+ B allows Steve to shoot up and glide across the stage using Elytra. The move can be tricky and requires proper timing before takeoff. It will also only last for a short while, so players will need to be careful they don't fall off the stage when it runs out of momentum.

Steve's Down + B is a powerful Dynamite box that can send enemy fighters soaring off the map if used properly. It can do the same to Steve if players detonate the attack while standing next to the dynamite box, though. By holding down B, players can create a trail and switch that triggers the dynamite when stepped on. This can create a visible trap that anyone can detonate purposefully or by accident.

Steve's Final Smash

Minecraft Steve in Smash Bros.

Steve's Final Smash sends enemy fighters catapulting into a room full of dynamite and Creepers. House of Boom, as the ultimate move is aptly named, will detonate and damage any other fighters caught in the explosion even though only one fighter will be directly sent into the House of Boom.

Minecraft Kirby

Nintendo has gone the extra mile and given Kirby special treatment if all that wasn't enough to satisfy players. Every new DLC fighter added to Smash Bros. means another outfit transformation for Kirby via his Copy ability, the design of which is usually a hat or cap. In this case, Kirby changes into Minecraft Kirby after swallowing and copying Steve. He's literally turned into a pink Minecraft block, with arms and feet to match the aesthetic. It's a really cute and welcomed addition to the game that players will appreciate.

There may be some changes from what was shown in the presentation, as it was recorded back in August. Even so, players can pick up the fighter as part of the Fighters Pass Vol. 2 or as part of a smaller bundle that includes Steve & Alex and the stage Minecraft World. Minecraft's Steve & Alex arrive on Nintendo Switch on October 13, along with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Version 9.0.
