Nintendo Announces Super Mario Movie From Illumination

Hollywood is giving Super Mario another shot. On Twitter, Nintendo’s official account announced that a movie starring Mario is in the works. Nintendo will partner with Illumination Entertainment for the film, which will be produced by Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination founder Chris Meledandri.

In November, reports indicated that Illumination was nearing an agreement with Nintendo to adapt the video game franchise for film. Nintendo’s Tweet confirms those reports and provides some additional insight about the minds behind the project.

Since Illumination is an animation studio, the upcoming Super Mario movie will likely be an animated feature. Illumination’s past works include the Despicable Me franchise and Secret Life of Pets. Since Illumination is the animation arm of Universal Pictures, the deal should follow an agreement with Nintendo and Universal’s theme parks made two years ago to build attractions based on Nintendo’s characters, including Mario.

Nintendo’s last major attempt to adapt the Mario franchise to film ended in the commercial and critical failure of Super Mario Bros. in 1993; with 34 reviews, the film sits at 15% on RottenTomatoes. Since then, the company has mainly focused on animated movies based on the Pokemon franchise. The film industry has yet to find success in adapting video games to the screen, but perhaps animation could be the way to go.
