The Super Mario Bros. Movie continues to make box office history, smashing the Easter Monday record set by the 2016 DC film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

According to Box Office Guru founder Gitesh Pandya, The Super Mario Bros. Movie made another $20 million at the domestic box office on Monday, April 10, dropping only 42 percent from Easter Sunday. In other words, the Nintendo/Illumination film now holds the record for the biggest Easter Monday box office ever, besting the $15 million Batman v Superman made on Easter Monday seven years ago. The Super Mario Bros. Movie also now holds the record for the biggest Easter Sunday box office take of all time. After just six days in release, the animated film has made a grand total of $224.7 million domestically and $420.8 million worldwide.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie opened in theaters in the United States and many international markets on Wednesday, April 5. The film had an estimated worldwide opening of $368 million -- the biggest for an animated film ever, surpassing the record set by Disney's Frozen II in 2019. What's more, The Super Mario Bros. Movie can likely expect a major box office boost on Friday, April 28, when the film hits theaters in the Mario franchise's native Japan. The film is also expected to arrive on NBCUniversal's Peacock streaming service on May 9.

Mario Returns to the Big Screen

Not counting 2019's Pokémon Detective Pikachu (which was produced by The Pokémon Company, not Nintendo), The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the first feature film based on a Nintendo video game to hit the big screen since the ill-fated live-action Super Mario Bros. film from 1993. The new film marks the beginning of a working relationship between Nintendo and the Universal-owned Illumination, the studio behind such animated features as Despicable Me and Sing.
