The first trailer for Disney+'s Summer Time Rendering anime released.

The trailer introduces the sleepy seaside town and the mysterious death that form the basis for the new horror/thriller series. The new anime is based on a manga by Yasuki Tanaka, an artist who previously served as the assistant to My Hero Academia creator Kohei Horikoshi. Tanaka's manga was originally released through Shonen Jump+, the digital spinoff of Shueisha's hit-making Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, and ran from 2017 until 2021.

Summer Time Rendering tells the story of Shinpei Ajiro, a boy who was orphaned at a young age and was subsequently raised by two sisters, Mio and Ushio. Ajiro, now a young adult, returns to his seaside hometown after learning that Ushio has drowned during a tragic accident. As Ajiro mourns her death, he uncovers evidence that Ushio's death wasn't an accident and that there is something sinister happening within the quiet small town.

The new anime is being produced by OLM, the anime studio behind the Pokemon franchise's various anime adaptations and Netflix's hit high school comedy series, Komi Can't Communicate. The series stars Natsuki Hanae, the voice of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba's central protagonist Tanjiro Kamado, as Ajiro, Anna Nagase as Ushio, the elder sister who raised him, and The Detective is Already Dead's Saho Shirasu as Mio, the younger sister who Ajiro must now protect from the dark forces stalking the town.

The series is scheduled to premiere on Japanese TV on April 14. Disney+ will exclusively stream the series internationally.

The psychological thriller will kick off Disney's first foray into the anime streaming market. The media conglomerate is just one of the companies that is turning to the anime industry in order to fill out its streaming library, joining the likes of Netflix, which in recent years has scooped up high-profile exclusives such as the new season of the Jojo's Bizarre Adventure anime, and Sony, who in 2021 paid $1.1 billion USD to acquire Crunchyroll, one of the world's most popular dedicated anime streaming services. Summer Time Rendering was one of three anime series that Disney announced that it would stream, with the other two being the highly anticipated return of the cult-classic Black Rock Shooter, and Tatami Time Machine Blues, a sequel to Science SARU's beloved The Tatami Galaxy.

Tanaka's original manga has been licensed for English release by Udon Entertainment. The first hard cover volume will be released in North America next May.
