"Suicide Squad" star Joel Kinnaman will play the lead role in Netflix's sci-drama "Altered Carbon."

The episode series is based on Richard K. Morgan's 2002 hardboiled cyberpunk novel of the same name set in a distant future where human personalities can be stored digitally and downloaded into new bodies.

"Altered Carbon" centers on Takeshi Kovacs, a former U.N. elite soldier known as an Envoy who's been imprisoned for 500 years, only to be downloaded into a future he had tried to prevent. If he can solve a murder in a world where technology has rendered death nearly obsolete, he may bet a chance at a new life.

Laeta Kalogridis ("Avatar," "Shutter Island") will write the project, which hails from Skydance Television. "Game of Thrones" veteran Miguel Sapochnik will direct the series premiere.

Kinnaman, who plays Rick Flag in Warner Bros.' upcoming "Suicide Squad," is best known for his roles in "RoboCop," "The Killing" and "Easy Money."
