Thompson demonstrated clear affection for the character, stating, "I love that dude!" The writer subsequently explained that he and his brother loved Ambush Bug as children. He then went on to praise Ambush Bug co-creator Keith Giffen, calling him "one of the great storytellers in comics" who "told so many fantastic stories."

Singling out "Bug's voice, his weirdness" as strengths, Thompson argued that the character "brings a completely different energy to the book and a humor that I felt was needed." He ultimately referred to it as "a childhood dream come true to get to write for that maniac" and expressed his "hope we're doing the character justice."
