WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Suicide Squad #4 by Robbie Thompson, Eduardo Pansica, Joe Prado, Julio Ferreira, Marcelo Maiolo, & Wes Abbott, on sale now.

The current Suicide Squad is full of backstabbing and subterfuge, even as they've just been assembled. Peacemaker has been angling to rebel against Amanda Waller, Rick Flag has become a wildcard, and Superboy has been actively sabotaging missions to give targets a chance to escape.

However, one of the most strange and pressing questions has centered around William Cobb, otherwise known as Talon. During a confrontation with Red X in Suicide Squad #4, another clue is revealed about his current mental state -- and hints at a major secret he's keeping from the team.

The Court of Owls with their Talon assassin

Talon is one of the more dangerous killers in the DC Universe. Born William Cobb at the turn of the twentieth century, he briefly spent some time with Haly's Circus, gaining considerable skill with knives in the process. But after falling in love with a wealthy young woman, William was chosen to be trained in the way of the Talons -- the personal assassins and killers for the Court of Owls. He became a deadly agent for the Court of Owls, and especially committed to the ultimate corruption of his great-grandson, Dick Grayson. He worked with the Court of Owls to target Grayson while he was an amnesiac and working under the identity of Ric Grayson, and came close to breaking him and molding him into a new Talon. But this ultimately failed, and Dick was restored to his true self during the subsequent "Joker War" storyline.

Afterward, Cobb was seemingly found in a bizarre state, incapable of saying anything but "who" and lashing out at anyone who approached him. The current Suicide Squad roster was assigned to recover him from Arkham Asylum, with Peacemaker and Talon barely escaping the toxins unleashed in the asylum as a part of the A-Day Massacre to escape. Since then, Talon has been used as a soldier for the Squad, his deadly skillset making him an asset to Waller and Peacemaker's mission. Throughout his earliest missions, he's been a useful fighter, and a dangerous ally -- as well as a seriously unhinged figure, with Culebra doing her best to hold him under control despite his apparent inability to communicate.

But it appears that his entire condition is an act. After helping the Suicide Squad attack the Titans Academy in hopes of capturing Bolt, the Squad escapes with Red X as their captive. But the mysterious young hero quickly escapes captivity and makes their way through the Suicide Squad base. Notably, he also sews seeds of discord among the Squad, inciting them to an even more chaotic rebellion against Waller. When Talon tries to corner Red X away from the rest of the Squad, the young vigilante is able to catch Talon by surprise and not only beat him down but tease that Talon is actually faking his condition. Talon quickly reveals this to be the truth, asking in shock who Red X could possibly be behind his mask. But he doesn't find an answer and is instead knocked out by Red X.

There still remain some major questions about Talon, and what he's doing as a part of the Squad. His status in Arkham Asylum is still a mystery, as it seems the hospital was unaware of who exactly he was. There's also the question of whether Red X's remarks about Talon trying to fake mental issues to get out of the Suicide Squad are accurate -- or if he wants to be there but operating under his own specific rules of engagement. There's even a chance he's there to monitor the Squad for the Court of Owls, carrying on his work for the organization even outside his attempts to corrupt his descendant into his successor. There are numerous mysteries surrounding the Suicide Squad -- but Talon's might have just taken another level in terms of intrigue.
