Margot Robbie was just as perplexed as most other DC fans when it came to the relationship between Harley Quinn and The Joker in Suicide Squad.

During a set visit attended by Screen Rant, Robbie, who'll reprise her role in Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), explained her confusion with Quinn and the Clown Prince of Crime's romance. "I guess what's always surprised me, or the thing… and I said this when publicizing Suicide Squad, the first film, is that her relationship with Joker always did confuse me the most," she said. "That was the thing that took me the longest to get my head around."

Harley Quinn made her debut in the Batman: The Animated Series episode "Joker's Favor." Created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, the character quickly became a fan-favorite due to her fierce loyalty and frequent mistreatment by her infamous boyfriend. In Suicide Squad,  however, the relationship between the pair is drastically flipped on its head, with The Joker going above and beyond to have Harley Quinn returned to him once more. Robbie went on to discuss how Quinn deals with the aftermath of her split from the Joker in Birds of Prey.

"In this film though we’re exploring her not being with Joker," she explained. "And I actually understand the break-up. That’s something I feel like everyone can kind of understand and relate to in some ways. Though she deals with--like she blows things up, I don’t do that. I understand the motivation that spurred on that train of thought."
