The Suicide Squad writer/director James Gunn revealed it was more problematic to create Task Force X member King Shark than either Rocket Raccoon or Groot from Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy movies.

"He was actually harder than both Rocket and Groot to develop," Gunn told Total Film while discussing the difficulties in creating King Shark for The Suicide Squad. "Rocket was hard because it’s difficult taking an animal and turning it into a humanoid shape, but it’s five times more difficult to do that with a shark – it was a very, very painstaking process."

Gunn added that King Shark also differed from Rocket and Groot from a character standpoint, "because at the end of the day, with the Guardians, we know they're good."

"That isn’t true of the Suicide Squad," Gunn concluded. "King Shark is a fish and he eats human beings. He doesn’t have such a mammalian love for people. But he wants to belong and he wants to show that he’s smart. And he’s not."

Gunn previously explained on Twitter why he chose not to use King Shark's hammerhead design for the movie. "But having eyes on the sides far apart made it incredibly awkward shooting interactions with other people," he said. "You couldn't really see him looking at the other person & the shots tended to be too wide."

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Michael Rooker as Savant, Flula Borg as Javelin, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Mayling NG as Mongal, Peter Capaldi as The Thinker, Alice Braga as Solsoria, Sylvester Stallone as King Shark, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Nathan Fillion as TDK, Sean Gunn as Weasel, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, John Cena as Peacemaker and Steve Agee, Taika Waititi and Storm Reid.
