Jared Leto has dismissed the rumor that he once gave his co-star Margot Robbie, who played fellow supervillain and love interest Harley Quinn, a dead rat while the two were filming Suicide Squad in 2016.

In an interview with GQ, Leto discussed what he called the "incredible opportunity" that was stepping into the infamous role of DC's Joker. The actor remarked how despite the huge amount of fun he had with the role and on set, certain things took on a life of their own, including the well-circulated rumor that Leto gave Robbie a dead rat as a method acting impulse. Leto said, "I never gave [Robbie] a dead rat, that's just, that's not true." He continued, "I actually gave her a lot of, I found this place in Toronto that had great vegan cinnamon buns and that was a very common thing."

Leto recalled his experiences diving into such a prolific character as well as the pressure that came with being part of such a high-budget and high-exposure movie project like Suicide Squad. "Just forget the character for a second, when you're part of these giant movies, they inherently come with maybe more responsibility it feels like. Maybe it shouldn't, and maybe that's my fault to not try to filter that out?"

Written and directed by David Ayer, Suicide Squad followed a rag-tag group of previously imprisoned supervillains who are forced to carry out black ops missions for the government in exchange for reduced sentences. While the film was widely considered a box office success, grossing $325.1 million in the United States and Canada, the critical response was lackluster at best. The film received a mere 26% approval rating based on 378 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and an average rating of 4.78/10.
