James Gunn, director of The Suicide Squad, announced he's completed the DC Extended Universe film and praised Warner Bros. for how well the process went.Gunn tweeted, "#TheSuicideSquad is fully finished and cut and I made every single choice and they never once even slightly interfered. They gave very few notes - they were usually good and minor and I took them if I wanted to and didn't if I didn't want to. Warners was creatively amazing."RELATED: New The Suicide Squad Footage Almost Earns the Film's R-Rating

Gunn's description of his experience contrasts with that of Suicide Squad director David Ayer, who has lamented studio changes to his film after poor reviews for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and positive buzz -- and box office -- for 20th Century Fox's Deadpool and its comedic tone. "My soulful drama was beaten into a 'comedy,'" Ayer said in May 2020. Suicide Squad grossed $746 million but received harsh reviews and negative coverage about its production and the antics of Jared Leto, who played The Joker.

Suicide Squad and The Suicide Squad are based on the DC title about incarcerated supervillains recruited to perform covert black ops missions for the federal government's Task Force X, on the promise of having their sentences reduced -- if they survive.

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, Peter Capaldi, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, Michael Rooker, Alice Braga, Pete Davidson, Joaquín Cosio, Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, Nathan Fillion, Steve Agee, Sean Gunn, Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, Jennifer Holland and Tinashe Kajese, with Sylvester Stallone and Viola Davis. The film arrives in theaters and on HBO Max Aug. 6, 2021.
