Filmmaker James Gunn -- best known for his work on Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy films -- will soon transition from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the DC Extended Universe for 2021's The Suicide Squad as writer and director. The film will serve as both a sequel and a reboot to 2016's Suicide Squad from fellow filmmaker David Ayer. According to Gunn, he has spoken with Ayer about The Suicide Squad.

In his Instagram Stories, Gunn spoke highly of Ayer and revealed that they have indeed talked about Gunn's upcoming project. However, he did so without giving away too much about the film.

"David Ayer is a great guy [and] we have discussed and I've told him what we're up to with The Suicide Squad at least a little bit," Gunn stated. Ayer praised the hiring of Gunn last year when the latter was tapped to write its script.

Written and directed by Ayer, Suicide Squad hit theaters on August 5, 2016, and was the third installment of the DC Extended Universe. While it made $746.8 million worldwide, the film garnered negative reviews from critics, with such elements as the direction and story coming under fire. A sequel was announced in March 2016, which Gunn would eventually become the director of earlier this year.

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad is set to hit theaters Aug. 6, 2021. Several cast members from 2016's Suicide Squad will reprise their roles, including Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg and Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang. Also joining the cast are David Dastmalchian, John Cena, Joaquin Cosio, Nathan Fillion, Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, Sean Gunn, Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, Pete Davidson, Taika Waititi, Alice Braga, Steve Agee, Tinashe Kajese, Daniela Melchior, Peter Capaldi, Julio Ruiz, Jennifer Holland, Idris Elba and Michael Rooker.
