The Suicide Squad will feature a cameo from its modern creator, John Ostrander.

Writer/director James Gunn replied to Twitter user Justin Mevorah, who asked if Ostrander would appear in the film based on a photo featuring the writer with Michael Rooker's Savant. "Good eye, Justin!" Gunn wrote. "Yes, John Ostrander- the creator of the late '80's Squad in the comics- who just happens to have started in the entertainment industry as an actor (he's really good!) - plays Dr. Fitzgibbon in The Suicide Squad."

Ostrander first introduced the Suicide Squad in the Legends miniseries for DC, which he helped plot. He would later launch the Squad into their own title in 1987 with artist Luke McDonnell and developed the role of Oracle for Barbara Gordon with his late wife Kim Yale. The Suicide Squad features several supervillains coerced into black ops missions for the government, in order to reduce their prison sentiment.

Gunn has featured a character named "Fitzgibbon" in all of his films, named after a family friend. A Dr. Fitzgibbon appeared as Meredith Quill's physician in Guardians of the Galaxy. Though the extent of Ostrander's role has yet to be revealed, producer Peter Safran hinted at Nazi-era experiments and prisons.

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Michael Rooker as Savant, Flula Borg as Javelin, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Mayling NG as Mongal, Peter Capaldi as The Thinker, Alice Braga as Solsoria, Steve Agee as King Shark, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Nathan Fillion as TDK, Sean Gunn as Weasel, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, John Cena as Peacemaker, Taika Waititi and Storm Reid.
