Suicide Squad director David Ayer revealed that he originally intended for Harley Quinn to be romantically involved with someone aside from the Joker.

On Twitter, a fan asked Ayer if the character El Diablo survived in his original script, to which the director responded, "Diablo survived originally, Harley and Deadshot hooked up as a couple. This was changed during reshoots."

Ayer has previously spoken about how Suicide Squad was changed because of studio demands, including the removal of many scenes featuring Jared Leto's Joker. He has also hinted at a larger role for Harley Quinn and more connections to the DC Extended Universe.
